Which country is the best country to retire in?

Which European country is cheaper to retire in? I like western Europe?

  • I also speak Spanish. I would like to retire in a country and town where the cost of living is not high, people are friendly, and crime is low. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Do you have an EC passport ? if you don't the simple answer is that you can't. OK, if your exceptionally rich some doors may be open. If you do have an EC passport then Spain is the only Spanish speaking country. The UK, Malta and Cyprus are pretty much English speaking but none of these are cheap. Lowest cost of living is probably in the Baltic States of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia but you will struggle with the language. Few there speak English and even less speak Spanish. EDIT. OK there is no single EC passport, what I meant was a passport issued by the government of an EC member country.

If you speak Spanish, why not choose Spain? Good weather, most of the people are friendly and the cost of living is reasonable. I've been there several times and loved it :)

You shout go to Spain. It`s peaceful, and there are very much good-payed jobs. Or,when you want to go to East, you will choose Romania or Hungary. You will have fun there. And the cost of living is not high!n there is speaking a kind of latin.I live there,in Romania.I recommend it for you.Everything is cheap there. An iPhone 4 is 400 euros.

I don't think western Europe is cheap at all. We retired in Hungary from the US. My husband is a citizen here and my son is as well. It was still very difficult at immigration for me to get my resident permit. We should of started the process while still in the US, we did all the paperwork ourselves after we had already arrived in Hungary, call the consulate of any country you want to move to first and save yourself a huge and expensive hassle. You will need to proved proff of income , have a certain amount in an local bank account and buy your own health coverage just to start. Hungary is nice enough but there are allot of petty crimes and scams around, they system is different for almost everything from the way things go in the US. Some things are easier to do and others are a nightmare. If you have ready funds and are retired, it is not too hard to move overseas, there are lawyers that specialize in immigration.

I'd suggest Montenegro, Czech Republic, Serbia, Macedonia or Bosnia and Herzegovina... Well if I was you I would probably go to Spain. I think Croatia is still cheaper than western Europe(but it won't be in a few years)...and most people there speak English. I will probably retire there but only because I know the language. I think people in Spain are better than Croats...Croats are violent they can't even hold peaceful gay prides yet.
