So what is life in Norway really like?

How is life in Trondheim, Norway?

  • I am considering relocating to Trondheim, Norway and any information on the city will be very much appreciated - on quality of life, weather, unemployment rate etc. Do you think it would be possible for a person that does not speak norwegian to find a job there in the area of marketing & branding? Thanks.

  • Answer:

Possible, yes. Likely, no. If you do not have a EU country passport, then you must first get a job offer from a company in Norway, apply for work and residence, prearrange your living arrangements, pay the application fee, and wait 2-3 months for an answer. Language and culture is a must. You need to either learn Norwegian well before arrival, or set aside your first 3-4 months in intensive language courses (at your expense). Quality of life is high; crime is low in Norway. Taxes are very high, taking about 50% of your income unless you qualify for some reductions. Cost of living is very high.

My wife is from Trondheim, and I’m there visiting her family several times every year. Its a lovely place with a great shopping district, and a lot of nice restaurants, nightclubs and bars. There are several Universities there so there is alot of young people from different part of the country. I’m in marketing my self and must say that there is not alot of jobs there in our line of work. But recently several companies like Google have put up office there. So i think its going to be more and more. As an EU citizen there should be easy to get a possibility to job there. About language; English is understood by 95 % + so it should be no problem. If you understand danish you should be able to read alot of Norwegian, but you may want to learn some more spoken language. You will find spoken language a bit different. I know alot of peoples working in norway in marketing and advertising not knowing a word in Norwegian so it shouldn’t be so hard. Norway has high taxation levels, and the prices are high. But so are the wages. And besides we have one of the best social security systems in the world. I pay about 35-40 % tax I guess. Living standards are very high, Norway is rated top 3 every year in the UN living standard meter, and the unemployment is low (about 4-5 %).
