Brief Europe Trip - Suggestions and Tips?

  • A friend and I are planning to do a very short backpacking trip to Europe (2 weeks) in the fall. Can someone help me out with things like how much it would cost or how we could see the most in that short time on a budget... thanks in advance for your help!!!!

This is too big a question to answer in one go. But I'll start by helping you with some structure. Your trip is going to comprise of the main components of transport, accommodation and eating. For transport consider a train pass , possibly a youth pass: Eurail :http://www.eurorail.com/ Next accommodation. Hostels can be good value, but are priced per bed usually. Cheap hotels can work out better value , so choose carefully. This site has some great offers and compares hostels and cheap hotels across Europe : France :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com/France/ Spain : http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com/Spain/ Germany :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com/Germany/ Portugal :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com/Portugal/ United Kingdom :http://www.cheaperthanhotels.com/United-Kingdom/ Travelling at night can give you a free sleep on the trains - but you will want to freshen up in certain places such as those examples above. One big tip - you'll notice last minute specials which often provide super discounts and free inclusions - watch out for them within 21 days. Lastly - located well. Don't waste time by staying long wys from the attractions you want to see -also wasting money on local transport. Plan well and you'll have a great time !!

Which countries are you planning on visiting? The cheapest way is probably by train. They offer tickets on the website below.

I would also suggest that you travel at night to help bring costs down and allow you to travel at night so as not to waste days....2 weeks is a short time...so I would suggest doing less things but at a slower pace....I guess the question is where....France or Italy might be places to start you could easily spend that time in each place...I guess maybe if you go along the Med coast line you would see a good variety of places...... Accommodation will be the most expensive thing...I will put links to some backpackers/hostels that will help. Transport is another.....a eurorail pass may be an option (and its nicer to travel in) or I will put a bus link. There are companies (eg busabout) that have specific routes they do and you get on and off where you want and stay the night (pay your own accommodation) which may be an option...link included. This way you can get a specific route and see specific places and not get overwhelmed as there are soooo many places to see. Food will be another of the main expenses...so try and be frugel to help save money.... Its hard to say where you could go really as it depends on what you like ie cities, country, views etc. The links may help you with other infro for your travels as well which would be worth viewing

I live in Switzerland and believe me the train is not the cheapest.Hiring a car is cheaper than the train.Or going on a bus.try this website: www.budgetexpeditions.com. Europe is a great place to backpack in and quite save.Just look out for those pick pockets! Or just google Europe Tours and you will find great ideas and prices.
