-
Hello, I will be flying at the end of April to first week of June from Seattle USA to York. My plans are... England - York to London - take train to Paris France - Paris and 1 near by city - take train to Italy Italy - Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, and SOME HOW get to Greece Greece - Athens and then short 3 days trip to nearby island - and then go back to Athens to fly back to Seattle My budget is 4200$ USD per person, for 2. The plane ticket from Sea to UK and from Athens back to SEA is about 1200$ is this trip reasonable if i plan to spend $45 Euro / person a day living in mostly hostsels? What is my best way to travel in europe? I looked into euro select pass, but i dont know can i use it from London to Paris and from rome to athens (is there even a direct train? ) What is the best way to get from Rome to Athens on a budget? i am ok with a day's travel on a train. What is a good city to spend 3 days in France other than Paris that's near by or along the route that i'm taking? Is there a better more reasonable route than the one i'm using? If so please list. Thank you!

Answer:
Well I am not sure of the airfares as I am not american so have no idea. I will say it is probably a good idea to have one route so you don't have to backtrack over areas you have already been to. You might want to increase the amount per day, to be on the safe side as I usually go with 20-30euros per person for dinner and 10-15 for lunch. I generally stayed in hotels as I liked my own room and they served breakfast. Then there is getting around each city. Depending on a few things, it can cost 10 euros or more per day, especially if you want to go to a place outside the main center. Some places are cheaper and so it does even out but keep it in mind. To get from Italy to Greece there are ferries that go from Bari in Italy and I think it is an overnight trip, otherwise there is train as well. I haven't been to Greece so I can't help you there. York is lovely and London has quite a bit to see. The UK is quite pricey. Are you taking the eurostar from London to Paris? Lucky you, I hear it is a great ride. I wished I had done it..I flew to Paris. I have been to some other places in France, a bit further out than where you want to go so I can't really recommend too many places. I skimmed Lyon which looked quite nice, but I was travelling with someone who put a dampner on my touristy spirit, but apparently it has a lovely medieval part. I also went to Grenoble which is a winter resort town and was quite nice but there might be some other more lovely places, maybe places like Marsielle, Nice or Aux en Provence down on the south coast might be nice. I missed out on Milan as I heard there was not that much there apart from the church. Venice was surprisingly small and you can walk around it easily in a day. Florence was lovely. You do not say how long you are there for but you can do some train trips in under 2 hrs to places like Pisa, Lucca and Sienna which I recommend all. I did Pisa and Lucca in one day. Sienna is in the other direction. Florence was quite busy when I went so I was quite pleased to escape the people to the other places, but there are some lovely buildings and amazing galleries/museums. Rome has a bit to offer as well, but I did not get as much out of it as I wanted (it was in the middle of my Italian trip and I got overwhelmed by research and accidentlally came across the Trevi fountain and had no idea what it was, same with the Roman forum and only have 2 blurry photos). The trains are pretty good in Europe and are regular and efficient. You might not be able to get direct trains but you will certainly be able to find a train to get there, and the route varies on where you will be going in between eg France. Your route seems good and have a fantastic time!
