What is the best advice you have on going to Rome?
-
I'm going to Rome from July 4-7. I basically have three full days and a half. What advice can you give my friend and I to have a great Rome experience? How much should we spend? Can we get by on a nice meal for 20 euros for dinner? If you had to be in Rome for one day what would you absolutely have to do? Are the buses hard to get around? Two of us girls are blonde, one Canadian and one Aussie...what do we need to watch out for? Thank you so much! michelle

Answer:
Taxis. Real taxis are white and wait in line at the taxi parking - avoid 'taxists' who go looking for customers, chances are they are not authorised and will rip you off. Prices from the airport are fixed: Euro 40,00 from Fiumicino to Rome center & viceversa Euro 30,00 from Ciampino to Rome center & viceversa Let the taxi driver know you are familiar with this (they cannot make you pay more, if they do, take the car number) For public transportation, you can do a BTI, it costs 11,00 euros and lasts three days with unlimited journeys on bus and the small metro system. For 20 euros it shouldn't be a problem to have pizza with a coke or beer for two people. Ice-cream is about 1 euro per 'ball', coffee "from .80 to .90 at the bar, whatever they ask if you sit at the table". There are McDonald's if you miss your Big Mac. Don't drink from the fountains - drinking water comes from the pillar-like fountains which are everywhere. If you want to visit churches, remember: short pants or skirts and bare shoulders are not allowed. People already mentioned pickpockets. Common sense ought to take care of them: remember a bag or backpack can be slit open with no fuss and no noise. 'Scippo' (snatch) is not so common as in Naples, nevertheless, don't wear gold necklaces or expensive wristwatches, and if carrying a bag keep it on the side of the wall, not the road. Enjoy your holidays,

Make sure you photocopy your passport/other important documents and have one copy with you and one at your hotel...that way if they got stolen you are not screwed.

Don't go there, it's a sh*thole.

it is a great city and easy to walk round but be careful there are lots of pickpockets and it is the only place in all of my travels where the taxi driver short-changed me. Do not be put off but take sensible precautions and enjoy.

Its great you'll love it! Take comfy shoes for plenty of walking, dont worry about buses the metro takes you everywhere and is dirt cheap! You can get a meal for quite cheap on the outskirts - lush food and drink however if your in the centre the prices shoot up!! Watch out for pick pockets!!! The spanish steps are lovely and a triip to the Trevi fountain at night is a must, I really enjoyed it all!! Have fun!!! K xx

It's fabulous and you'll have a lovely time. Be really careful on the buses, there is one in particular, I think it's the one that goes to the Vatican - that they should re-name the "Tourist Pick-Pocket Bus" so be careful! Food - you can buy really cheap, tasty food anywhere and everywhere. Try the Italian Ice-cream, out of this world. Must Do - visit the Vatican. AND walk all the way to the top. The view across the city is amazing. Don't do this if you are claustrophibic as it gets very tight the higher you walk up, and you have to bend your head to fit in as the walls curve and there are absolutely loads of stairs (flat shoes needed!). Oh, be really careful crossing the roads. Every car will have dents, it seems that "pedestrian crossings" don't really matter to Italian drivers, they only break if they really, absolutely have to and tend to swerve round you. Don't run across the road, try to remain calm and make eye contact with the driver and stride across with purpose (this works!). Enjoy!!

Make sure you go to the Coliseum - the pearl of cultural legacy.

Beware of small motorbikes that draw up on the pavement (sidewalk) the passenger grabs at your handbag, camera, necklace, watch etc and the driver accelerates away. If you hang on you get dragged along until you let go or they cut the strap. I have witnessed this on many occasions and it is not nice. Do not carry a handbag, camera etc where it can be seen, do not wear a necklace or watch to be seen.

Much of what has been said, but in particular be especially on guard for the pickpockets on the most popular bus route (is it nmr 42?) that takes you from Termini to the Vatican. They know that most of the travellers on this route are tourists, and make it a prime target. Obviously this applies at all of the many tourists spots, Trevi, Colosseum, Spanish Steps, Piazza St. Pietro, but on the crowded bus it is particularly easy to bump into someone and snatch a wallet or bum bag without the owner being aware that it has happened. Above sites are amongst the "absolutely must do". But be watchful, be aware and enjoy a great city.
