What is the cheapest, yet, comfortable way to stay the night in Zermatt, Switzerland?

How much would it cost to travel across Europe?

  • I just turned 18 and haven't left the house for 4 years due to agoraphobia and my family think a holiday will do us all good. I'm from the UK and none of us like flying so it would have to be either car, train or cruise. I'm no good with geography so forgive me if I get some wrong but I was thinking mostly western Europe so maybe something like Dover> France> Belgium> maybe Netherlands> Germany> Luxembourg> Switzerland> Italy> South of France> Spain then home. They would be some places I'd like to go but don't have to include them all. My mum would've loved Greece but it will probably be too far. Also we wouldn't be clubbing or anything major probably just touch there, buy something small, have a meal, maybe sleep and head off to the next country in the same or following day. There would be 4 of us going: me, my sister, my mum and step-dad. I'd be paying for most of it as I've just come into some money but everyone else works too so we will most likely have enough money. So how much do you think it will cost? How long would it take? (considering we're only going to stay there a day at most, obviously sleeping in some places, and only touching on each country like Calais and Barcelona instead of going all the way through the countries) Would it be best to take the train or car? How much would a train from place to place cost? eg: Calais>Belgium etc We've seen some affordable cruises that are about £600-£800pp but prob could only afford 2-3 of us depending on how much money my mum has would this be cheaper? How much would hotels/hostels cost per person per night? Thank you

I agree with Orla, take it easy. Do give yourself time to adjust and stay near the ferries back home. Ferries from the UK to France, booked in advance can cost as little as 50 pound for a car and 4 people. If you buy your tickets on the day you travel, you can expect to pay 200 pound. In France, Belgium and Netherlands, you should count on €50 to €200 for a hotel room for two, per night. Living costs for a tourists besides are very much like in England. Count on 25 to 100 pound per person per day. The lower cost are for when you book hotels ahead and are careful to find cheap ones, and look out for cheap restaurants and such, do picknicks from market bought food and see free sights. The higher costs are for hotels looked for when you are in need of one, eating out in restaurants all the time and paying for sights. If you do travel farther from the coast, the living costs will still be around the same level, just your travel costs will go up. Petrol is almost as expensive there as it is in the UK. And hotel costs are varying more wildly. You could travel by train rather than by car, with 4 of you it will cost about the same. But if you are not happy in company of strangers and in unknown places, trains will make you more anxious than your own car (or your family car.)

You'd need weeks to be able to do that, hon. And lots of money. Why not keep it manageable and just take the car to a nice town in the west of France, close to the Tunnel or ferry, so if you want to, you can get back home fairly easily? I would recommend Brittany, it's very pretty and you could be there within a couple of hours of leaving the ferry or tunnel if you're taking the car, and there are loads of accommodation options (which you will probably find on www.hostelworld.com).

It would be a bit pointless to visit each country just for a day, it will take you a whole day just to travel from one country to another! I really suggest that, since you've had some problems, a good way to get used to travelling would be to visit just one country. France would be a good one to start with, and gives you the option of crossing the Channel by Eurostar train (through the tunnel) and that takes you straight to Paris, or the ferry where you could stay on the coast for a few days, then take the train to Paris. Travelling to several countries will require some weeks, and will be expensive. You need to try a small trip first, see if this works out OK, and then plan another, longer, trip later on. It might be a good idea to visit a travel agent and discuss all your ideas. Then you'll get a good overview of costs, possibilities, a timeframe etc.
