Private or Public school when you want to study in another country?

What European country should I study abroad in?

  • I'm hoping to do a student exchange program when I'm in college. I hope to live in Finland in my late twenties, but because of that, I want to study abroad somewhere else. I want to become a pharmacologist someday, so any country that has a good biochemistry outlook would be a major plus! :) The countries I'm considering, in order, along with my worries about each are: 1. Russia- I love Russia and its people, but I'm worried it might not be safe enough/too conservative and male-oriented. I am Catholic, but I'm also pretty liberal. 2. Denmark- I've heard Denmark is amazing (and the guys there are goegous!). However, my parents tell me there's a major drug crowd in Copenhagen, which is where I'd probably go to study. 3. Italy- I love pretty much everything about Italy. :D The only worry I have is that the Italian legal system doesn't work well with foreigners. 4. Sweden- They guys are cute, it's very progressive, a beautiful country...my one worry is that I have a Finnish last name, and I've heard that Finns are treated as second-class citizens in Sweden. 5. Germany- The science aspect would be great, but I'm worried that I wouldn't fit in with the culture well. Germans are very affectionate once you get to know them (cheek kisses, not much personal space and the like), and I'm sort of reserved, even though I'm friendly...I don't know, that probably doesn't make much sense. 6. Estonia- The people are really polite and the nature is gorgeous, but again I'm worried about safety. 7. Spain- I take Spanish in school and speak it with Spanish-speaking friends, so the language barrier wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not a big fan of hot weather. (Though I can deal with it- I live in Los Angeles.) 8. I know this isn't European, but I'm also considering Costa Rica because of the science programs. I've been there once, and it's beautiful! Really, really safe too; I don't know where people get the idea that it's dangerous. 0_o Anyway, if you could help me out by telling me about any of these countries in your eyes, or suggesting another one, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you! :)

  • Answer:

Estonia, which is my country and which I appreciate after having lived 12 years abroad, more than ever.

"The Italian legal system doesn't work well with foreigners"? Who said that to you? And what kind of legal issues are you worried about? If you are a citizen of an EU member country, you are pretty much free to travel and live anywhere in Italy. If you are not, a visit to the nearest Italian Consulate or "Istituto Italiano di Cultura" will give you all the information you need to learn some Italian, enroll in your favourite course of studies and obtain the required Visa.

Sorry? Legal system in Italy doesn't work with foreigners? What do you mean with that? I sincerely hope you aren't referring to the Amanda Knox case...

I'm sorry that I don't have an answer for you, but I have so many of the same interests as you! I would live to study in those countries too. I'm anxious to hear the answers that people give you. Good luck with your studies!

I would suggest Germany as it is an economic powerhouse in Europe. My other place is Denmark. one of the best ways to spend time in Europe as an exchange student is via Rotary International Youth Exchange Program (YEP). You can spend a year (final year of school) in a country where you learn the culture, language and customs. To find out more contact your local Rotary club or visit this link: http://www.rotary.org/en/studentsandyouth/youthprograms/rotaryyouthexchange/pages/ridefault.aspx
