Couple of questions about Europe: when to go and how much money I'll need?
-
I'm from Canada and I'm planning to do a big vacation to Europe next year, after I graduate from university! I plan to stay there for about 4 months, and I'll mainly visit countries in Western and Central Europe (still iffy about Eastern Europe). Just have a couple of questions: 1) Is it better to go in the summer or fall? I can go either season, but I do know of some advantages for both. If I go in the summer, generally better weather and longer hours in daylight (personal favourite for me). If I go in the fall, I heard less crowds and no lineups for tourist attractions. On the bonus side for fall, I usually work for a company in the summer, and going to Europe in the fall can allow me to make extra money for the trip. 2) How much money will I need for Europe if I'm staying for 4 months? I don't plan on splurging like crazy, I'll stay in hostels for the most part, but I'll go to fancy restaurants and stay in a famous hotel every now and then. I haven't done much planning yet for my Eurotrip since it is still a year away. But knowing how much money I'll need, as well as the best time to go, is good to know now. Thanks in advance!

First thing you need to know is that, as a Canadian citizen, you cannot stay in what is called the Schengen Zone, which encompasses Western Europe and most, if not all, of Central Europe, for more than 90 days out of every 180 days. So, your big vacation has just been shortened to three months! Fall is actually a lovely season to be in Europe. Some areas will still be heavily frequented by tourists, but there are plenty of areas, even within cities, that you can wander to that are still filled with beautiful things to see but with fewer tourists. I suggest you get a good guidebook to Europe such as Lonely Planet's "Europe on a Shoestring" which is aimed at budget travellers and will give you information on countries and cities, points of interest, itineraries, transport between and within countries, where to stay including hostels and budget hotels, what to eat and where, health issues, hints and tips, how much it will all cost, and plenty more. Start reading now, do research on the places you really want to see, and you'll be all set to go next year.

I tkink the best season to go to EUROPA is summer beause the weather is cold during fall. But that's change a lot: this spring was really hot and last summer was like the fall it rained a lot And later early in October it was a hot. But I live in belgium and that's how it's now. If you go in the southern of France during summer it's perfect it's hot.

You have the time so start Googling all the various places you may want to go to, check on hostels, hotels and transpo. I suggest get Eurorail tickets on line but be sure you check to different types so you can go where you want to go. It's the most convenient way to travel. Also try to have a general plan outlined so you can travel in a basic "circle" and start and finish where you fly in/out of. Travel light and if you start buying things ship home stuff by mail what you don't need. Now money. The average cost is somewhere between $120 to 160 or so PER DAY to live reasonably well, not incl flight and train. You can get by cheaper by mainly eating where the locals go, not tourists, staying in dorm rooms in hostels and not buying any expensive gifts or souveneirs. Keep in mind the Euro is worth more than Canadian dollars. A good way to exchange money is have a good checking or savings account and a DEBIT CARD. Use ATMs 24/7 for convenience they are almost everywhere. This also allows you to have whatever amount you really need without running short. Summer is way crowded, hostels are full, trains are crowded that's another reason to have a Eurorail Pass and if crowded upgrade to 1st class. many of the main museums have long lines in the summer, some very long. If you go from about the end of September you can make the Munich October Fest one of the great events. be sure to have reservations at a hotel/hostel ahead of time. So end of Sep to end Nov would be good as the weather will be cool day time, colder at night but not bad. Some areas will get rain but generally no large crowds. Also keep an eye open on the Euro/Dollar rates as a yr from now it could be better or worse or not much change. Enjoy!
