Where in Europe should I go to for a trip?

3 week backpacking trip through eastern europe... Where should I go?

  • Anyone have any ideas of places to go on my eastern european backpacking trip... Preferably in order (of a route) that i should take (or a rough idea). My plane gets in to frankfurt germany and leaves from frankfurt germany in December - January. Also where should i spend my new years? I have seen much of western and central europe and would like to focus this trip on Eastern Europe My idea was something like frankfurt, prague, vienna, budapest... then from there i am not sure where i should go to make sure i get back in time to frankfurt... Any help is appreciated!

Here is the interary from a trip I took 3 years ago. I drove, but I suspect you could backpak and hit the rails. 1 day Frankfurt- I took a Rhein river cruise to relax from the flight 1 day Pilsen- Beer, and a nice little city 3 days Prague- So much to do and see, only wished I had spent a few more days here. This amy be where you want to spend New Year. 1 day Brno- Industrial town, not really what I had expected. Maybe bag Brno and spend the extra day in Prague or Krakow 3 days Krakow- My favorite stop, the castle, market square, salt mine Cathedral, and the food. 3 days Budapest- Not to be missed. Could have spent a week here and still not seen everything I wanted to see 1 day Bratislava- Much better than I had expected, my want to bag it and spend the extra day in Budapest 3 days Vienna- Vienna is amazing, palace, history, culture and the Pratzer. 1 day Salzburg- Mozart's birthplace, Nice town. You might get in some skiing. 3 days Munich- Too expensive, but great beer gardens (Agustiner is the best), the rathaus with glockenspiel, If I had to do over again I would have just stayed two days here and spent the extra day in Heidelberg 1 day Heidelberg- Beautiful town, Great castle wonderful people

If only I were you: Prague- Budapest- Croatia (Dubrovnik/Split) - Ljubljana and then back to Germany. Or go north Latvia - Lithuania - Estonia... Which is much more affordable.

If I were going, I would spend Christmas in Salzburg, Austria. I've seen pics and it looks like a Christmas card. The friendliness of the people would make it even more enticing. Yes, I've spent a week in Salzburg, but it was June '05. Hotter than heck but still had a great time.

You could also visit Greece,Italy, Malta. There are train-travels. You could choose a "travel zone" and see many places.
