What are some things i should know for my trip to Europe this summer?
-
This summer im taking a trip to Western Europe: France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany. What are some important things that i should leanr/know? For example things to say and not say, what i should not try or do. Certain things i should try or establish. Who i shouldn't talk too? Any little bit would help, i've never traveled anywhere in my life so frankly i have no idea if i should just act American or cjange some habits to fit in more. Also is there any certain articles of clothing that would be useful in particular? Like a colored shirt for certain places?

Answer:
Be yourself, whatever you are. Nobody appreciates a faker. And be friendly. Smile and ask people if they speak English, don't assume that everyone you meet will be able to speak your language. If you like you could learn a couple of phrases in each language (you'll need 3 languages, German, Dutch, French. Please, thank you and the food is delicious are good ones to start with.) You can ask for directions if you need to, rather than stopping people on the street, you could just go into a shop nearby, I've found that to be the best way of getting directions. Wear comfortable clothes, everyone around you will be. Bring a light sweater and maybe a light scarf as well for the evenings, just in case. Also bring waterproof shoes and a waterproof jacket, because it could be damp, even in summer. Otherwise, it really depends on events you are going to - for example, if you are going to a nice restaurant or the opera, you will need to dress appropriately. As regards tipping in restaurants, it isn't really expected like it is in the US. Waiting staff are paid a wage, but if you are happy with the service you were given, a couple of Euro is a nice gesture. That money is usually put into one big pot for the staff Christmas party or whatever. As regards finding places to eat, simply ask at your accommodation where they would recommend. If you're staying at small, family-run places, you could always ask them (nicely) where THEY would go to eat if they were going out. The Netherlands has amazing Indonesian and Surinamese cuisine, be sure to try these.
