35 days in Europe what to see and where to go?
-
I am a 21 year college student who will be graduating this Spring, and before entering another 4 year program (dental school) will be traveling with three friends to Europe for 35 days this summer. We currently have a round trip flight from NYC-Barcelona and a 21 day everyday eurorail pass. Our plan is to have our first and last trips short inter-europe flights to maximize the 21 day pass. Currently we are thinking of doing a route like...BArcelona-Rome-Venice-Munich-vien… just wanted to ask for any suggestions or ideas of things to see/do in these places or alternate places/ideas. We all are going to be recent grads who do like to have fun and are going to be as cost-effective as possible. I appreciate anything you have to say

"rooting for the bulls" LOL! That would be me too - those poor bulls - the whole thing is so rigged against them - so unfair. Well, Ignatz gave a lot of great info. I'll only add a few things: save money on ATM fees by getting debit cards from either Schwab (best bet) or Capital One. Links below contain great info. Next, you should post this question at Lonely Planet dot com - that's THE place to do research and get tons of informed opinions (on their "Thorn Tree" forum). You can also ask about best hostels, etc. Finally, you realize that southern Europe gets real HOT in summer, right? Plus, you're talking about going to the main tourist destinations, so crowds, prices, hot... I don't know... but if I were you I might want to check out some cooler places... Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm... just a thought. Maybe skip Vienna/Wien - Munich is similar and better? Or just pick one of them. Bon Voyage!

Barcelona, Rome, Munich (one of 2 of my favorite Euro cities) be sure to have lunch in the English Gardens, Barcelona then to Nice you can day trip to Cannes and Monte Carlo where you take walk to the marina, "real wealth". Then into Italy, pass Pisa only Tower & closed often for repairs, go to Florence my other favorite city. Great shopping especially leather lots of art, culture, good food. Best food in Euro is generally where the locals eat, avoid tourist areas in general. Then down to Rome where you could spend a very long time & not see it all. Possibly down to Naples and then go to Pompeii and maybe The Isle of Capri (??). Return to Venice stay outside of Venice & train in each day very expensive city. You can walk just about everywhere with a good map but here do try to eat where the locals do. North to Lusanne, Switz. Boat over to Evian, go to Montreau & up to Staad on a gog wheel rail, great hiking & more wealth ( many Euro & some US actors have places here). Then to Munich & day trips to Garmisch & Berchtesgaden. Over to Salzburg. Vienna is very good but a bit boring ( my & a few other's opinion). Then back through Munich to Mainz and a trip up the Rhine, all day have a camera w/telephoto lots of old castles on the way. Get out in Cologne from there to Paris through Belgium. Return to Barcelona. I don't know if this will fit into your time but any part of it is a good trip. Check it all on line incl train schedules. Summer is the most crowded time so sometimes you need to check for train reservations if a long trip. You can save time w/overnight trips incl hotel money. Other Tips: Barcelona if you can stand it has bullfights (me & a few friends almost got kicked out because we kept, loudly, rooting for the bulls Drank a lot of cold beer that day. Get seats on the shady side. Exchange money at Bank ATMs w/Debit Cards. Safe, convenient 24/7 so you only get as much as you need every 3/4 days. Use hostels w/single/double rooms w/shower for a little more and comfort, privacy. In large cities there are Tourist Kiosks in or outside of train depots that can find you rooms & a lot of info. English is everywhere. Enjoy!!
