Is Portugal a good travel destination?

Non-mainstream travel destination in Europe?

• I'm off to Europe in a couple of months. I will be visiting Britain but given the small size of the continent I want to travel to another country **** within the European Union ****. I want to visit a non-mainstream tourist destination. I don't want to go to Paris, Venice, Prague... I was thinking about Lisbon, Portugal, somewhere in Scandinavia and Ireland. Is there any country/city * * * within the European Union * * * you would recommend?

  Lisbon in Portugal is an excellent choice.... In Ireland I'd recommend Galway on the west coast....don't bother too much with Dublin....Galway is fantastic..well worth a few days there...be sure to go to Connemara also....Roundstone, Ballyconneely, Clifden (if you can rent a car take the Sky Road, if it's a clear day (unusual in Ireland) it's simply stunning. For flight connections from the UK http://www.aerarann.com/ Another option in Ireland is Kerry in the south west...definitely worth a visit...the famous Ring of Kerry drive is spectacular. Also the Dingle peninsula.... You can get cheap flights to Faranfore Airport from the UK http://www.ryanair.com/site/IE/ Other places well worth visiting are San Sebastian in northern Spain, Stokholm in Sweden and Bergen in Norway If you google any of the places I've mentioned, you'll get lots of info..
