How do you get into Little Italy by train?

How to get from northern Italy to Slovenia by train.?

  • I'm planning out a trip that goes from Milan, Italy, to Bolzano, Italy, to Lake Bled, Slovenia, to Plitvice National Park, Croatia. I planned it out well all the way to Bolzano, but getting from Bolzano to Lake Bled is proving a challenge. I found the raileurope.ca website and found their map of stops, it says that it stoped in Bled, Slovenia, but when I go to check the rates for trains form Bolzano to Bled it says there are no trains doing this route the day I need or the day before or after.

  • Answer:

To get to Lake Bled from Bolzano, you'll probably have to get to Trieste, then take a train or bus to Ljubljana. From there you can get a train to Bled. I would have to have your exact dates of travel to create a workable itinerary for you. Bolzano to Trieste requires two changes (Verona and Venice Mestre), so it's going to take you about 6 hours. Buses to Ljubljana are not frequent, and they are not express, so it is likely that you will not arrive in Ljubljana until 8 PM or later, which means you'll have to overnight in Ljubljana before going to Bled. An alternative would be to take the 7 PM bus from Trieste to Koper, then a local bus to Piran. Spend two nights in Piran to see the Slovenian coast, then take a 0645 bus to Ljubljana and then a train to Bled.

It takes 7 to 10 hours on the train with multiple train changes. The best site for finding options is the German train site: http://www.bahn.com/i/view/GBR/en/index.shtml Note that the Lesce Bled train station is out of town. This may be helpful for your travels. It has links to the various train websites and information about train travel in each country: http://www.seat61.com/
