What can a teen do in southern France?

What are some nice things to see and do in Southern Europe (with Southern France as a starting point)?

• My boyfriend and I are going to stay in Montpellier from April to June and we're looking for nice places to visit and things to see and do around there. The only things we've planned so far is a trip to Barcelona in April to see two great bands and perhaps some trekking in the Pyrenees. We're not big fans of big cities and tourist attractions, so I'd love some advice from people who live there or have been exploring the area of Southern France and parts of the bordering countries (Spain, Italy, Monaco, perhaps Switzerland) that aren't too far away, to be able to plan these months. We're interested in music, nature, walking, old buildings, food, art, culture etc. but are looking for places that you don't find in the tourist books. That's why I'm asking here instead of googling. Would also appreciate any advice on cheap means of transportation.

  I loved the region of France east of Monaco, including the wonderful communities of Roquebrun-cap-Martin and Eze. Eze in particular was wonderful. It is a gorgeous little village perched up on top of a huge hill. Menton was also wonderful. We enjoyed just walking around and trying the many restaurants. You san still find many of the little wonderful mom-and-pop pensiones along the seaside in those small towns. They all haven't yet been knocked down to make big tourist hotels and condos! As for transportation, rail is the way to go. French Rail (SNCF) has a line that runs practically right along the seaside.
