What are the must-see destinations in Italy?
-
Aside from the obvious (Rome/Florence/Venice), I'd like some recommendations for "hidden gem" places to visit. I am taking a 3-4 week vacation to Italy, and am eager to explore the country, from North to South. I'm a historical/cultural enthusiast, but enjoy leisure as well. If this were my last trip to Italy, what would you recommend I see there. To add, I have been before, and have seen Rome, Florence, Venice, Verona, Pisa, Siena & Tivoli. Please indicate whether you have been to the spot you recommend.

When will you be here? There are thousands of local festivals that add to the experience of some of the lesser known destinations. For example, Marostica had a spectacular festival this past weekend. The first three weekends in November, there's a truffle festival in the Tuscan hilltop town of San Miniato - they also have duck races next month. Some of my favorite places to visit here (I've been to all of them in the 9 years I've lived here): Capri/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, Perugia, Mantova, Ferrara, Soave, Arezzo, Lucca, Trento, Bergamo, Orvieto, Alberobello, and Trieste. You could also head for Rimini and take the bus to San Marino for a day.

I recommend you try going South but not just to Capri and the Armalfi coast...there are so many suprises and hidden areas....for instance La Puglia is a gem of an area and hidden little Mideavel Villages, which suprising Jamie Oliver discovered just one or two. This area consists of massive tradition, great food and homely people . The area looks down on old farming areas and the platoe , some Towns are way up above sea Level . From this , you can try also to go to the other Coast which is well known for food and Beauty and swimming BARI not far from the Puglia region, it is on the Adriatic side of the Sea and very very Beautiful. These are the secret holiday destinations many Italians have known for a long time....once there you will be told and discover so much more around that area. There are Acient Forrests between the Capital of Puglia ' FOGGIA ' and going down to " BARI " and so much beautiful country side and towns.

Try the Amalfi Coast and go south. It looks like you haven't gone down there. See Naples and take a ferry to Pompeii and Herculaneum. The preserved ruins there are amazing.

been around italy dozens of times. first , I urge you to watch a soccer game preferably Milan or Juventus. I would drive from Rome to Milan but avoid any toll road. that'll do it. the south has many hidden gems (like amalfy) but you really need to look for them. other than that enjoy your vacation and know. the only way to prove you enjoyed Italy is to gain 10 pounds over the vacation :-)

Listen to the 3 ladies...Mich.....Conley ......& Jag, they related beautifully and are attractive enough for you to take a good look yourself in the South. I am a tour consultant (NOW) and visited Italy & Rome(Start) on way to Europe & London (END) for 28 days on double-deck coach in 1989 for my Celebration Tour of 20 years service in BCCS (Paid Airfare (SIA) for 2 as gift). After hearing it from the three ladies, is a temptation to try out in the South too. Places in Italy will not need me to say anything as there is the natural beauty and the historical value to attract your eyes and the feeling of the ancient time with the monuments & statues, all growing in your heart. My free advices to you are: a) a traveller & a tourist are two different person with not same thinking in look, taste, value, comfort, needs & beauty. Just think and fix yourself up for it. b) the budget control your spending and set your limit.........do your adjustment to balance the enjoyment and the cost. c) Family & wihout family will have different tour arrangement. What is your preparation? d) You did it right.......do the check & mark your liking but provide space for adding to surprise yourself.........is refreshing at that moment in your feeling. Happy Holiday and happy travelling.
