Where is the cheapest place in Europe to fly into (from the US?

If one is going to travel to europe, where is the cheapest / best place to fly into?

  • I would like to go to Greece, Spain, and pretty much make a tour of Europe by train. Just want to know what the best place to start is. Can you help?

    The airport taxes, even for a transfer, are pretty expensive. In general, tickets will be cheaper if you change planes in the U.S., not in Europe. I believe London, Paris and Frankfurt are the most expensive airports.

Whenever I go to Europe, I usually look at flying into London Heathrow first. It's fairly cheap to get to, and it has close proximity to Stansted Airport where you can get a low-cost airline, Ryanair, to the rest of Europe for very little money.

Well, there are major transport hubs like Frankfurt, Amsterdam , London and Paris. If you want to travel around, Paris is a good place, because it's kind of in the middle. It's handy for most of Europe. Greece is a bit further away, so I suggest trying one of the budget airlines like easyjet or ryanair. London is also a good transport hub, and you can get easyjet and ryanair flights out of there easily, and from there on get a eurail pass.

You should get a good price flying out of Chicago to London Heathrow or Frankfurt. As you mention you'd like to travel by train - why not take the Channel train from Britain? If you fly to Frankfurt you can get cheap charter flights (LTU, Condor,Air Berlin etc.) to other parts of Europe. Also check out the European rail pass, which is cheaper when bought in the US Happy trails!
