So what is life in Norway really like?

What's life like in Norway?

  • Answer:

It is an incredibly beautiful country. The fjords, especially on the western coast are really amazing. I love Oslo, it's a very international city and the people are really nice here. When you get outside of Oslo people aren't as warm. They don't mean to be rude, they just aren't that welcoming to strangers. It kind of has to do with "Janteloven" which is kind of the way society operates here. Norwegians value equality and fairness above all else, which is a good thing, but that's where those societal rules sprung from. Even in the smaller towns, Norwegians tend to be helpful and polite, they just aren't as likely to wave or start a conversation with you. I can't really answer if Norway is fun, because it depends on your definition. If you enjoy nature, hiking, swimming, skiing, ect, then Norway is incredibly fun. There is an active nightlife, but not like in the US. The price of alcohol is insane here, it's about $10 for a beer and $20 for a mixed drink. In Oslo there are many great plays, but those are nearly exclusively in Norwegian. Major artists tour through here frequently. In the summer there are a variety of outdoor events, especially in Oslo. The museums are nearly all free here as well. The downside to Norway is it the cost of living. I'm from the US, and even living on a Norwegian salary I still can't get used to the prices. Besides the alcohol I mentioned, a meal at McDonald's is about $20, a 20 oz soda at the store is $2, a hardcover book is $100 and a soft cover book is $20. The one thing that is strangelyy cheap is air travel. So you can hop on a plane for a four day weekend in another country for a reasonable price. I can answer any other specific questions if you have them. I hope that helped.

Simply put, it's great but expensive and very cold in winter. As you posed the question in english you will be pleased to hear that almost all Norwegians have a very good knowledge of English. Ian M
