Train ticket prices from Prague to Rome?
-
I am going through pages and pages on Google and I can't find anything to give me a straight answer (some pages even contradict themselves) so I was wondering if someone could help me by telling me how much would a train from Prague to Rome cost me (cheapest, I can sleep in a chair with my head on my backpack just as well as in a bed) and also, how often the trains from Prague to Rome come around, I don't want to risk being stranded in Prague for longer than I have to (I have to reach Rome within 1 day from my stay there). I heard there might have to be a change in either Vienna or Venice so if someone could clear that up for me? I speak Italian fluently and I am ok with German so my problem is not not finding answers or getting around when I arrive, I just need to have an idea what to expect about a train change and whatnot. Thank you in advance!

This site can help you with finding the time table: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/DEU/en/index.shtml I checked it on a random date for you and the fastest travel between Prague and Rome is about 18 hours, but that has only 7 minutes to change in Vienna (local spelling Wien) which is likely not enough. Better to leave Prague one hour earlier and spend some time in Vienna, even just to walk out of the station for a cheap bite in a local bakery. Finding the cost is less easy. The German site will not sell you the tickets on its automated system, the Austrian one might as you travel to and from Austria. http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp shows a price of about €42.50 for Prague to Vienna. And €74 as cheapest option for the night train to Rome, which has a compulsory reservation. If you wait till just before traveling you might have to pay much more. Changing trains is not difficult. Get out of the train as soon as it stops in the station, walk to where the next train leaves, search for the carriage that holds your seat and get in, get into your reserved seat and you are good to go again. While you can change trains in a short time when you know the station, in an unknown station and for a night train I would never dare it with less than 20 minutes, I rather have one hour than only 30 minutes. This site can explain you all you want to know about train travel in the whole world, just check out all that seems interesting. http://www.seat61.com/ The general pages might be most use for you. And if you decide to travel by train, also look at the 'buy tickets' page, which might seem like a shop but really is a set of links to other sites which sell. PS, flying might well be cheaper and easier, it certainly is faster, see http://www.skyscanner.net/ for a site that compares many airlines.
