How do you pronounce Russian words?

  • Whenever I see a Russian word the pronunciation is completely different from what I imagined it to be. Can anyone explain to me how to pronounce Russian words? the language seems very interesting and I am very curious.

    Well, many Russian language learners in opposite think that pronunciation is the easiest part of Russian, because it's completely straight as in German (just a very few exceptions). There is practically no combinations of letters that would give a new sound (as in English for ex.). You read the word the way as it's written, you just need to learn the alphabets and corresponding sounds (which takes the minimum of time) and memorize the stress for EACH word (there is no any common pattern for stresses in Russian, well they are, but even Russians hardly know any). The most common mistake non-natives do in Russian is wrong stressing. I guess you have problems now because you haven't learned the alphabet well. Once you do it, you'll see it's easy.

it is the matter of exclamation,something you would have to idea until you start learning. all the way, hard way. Russian alphabet contains 33 letters. The language indeed is interesting but it is difficult also. I judge it upon my friends and co-workers who took some classes in college. Russian pronunciation is phonetic unlike English. Apart from very few exceptional cases. Every letter makes one sound. there are no silent letters. I'd wager it's easier for English speakers to learn Russian as opposed to Russian speakers learning English.
