It depends where you will be staying. Moscow is pretty safe, as long as you mind your own business and are street smart. At night, a lot of the metro stations and nearby get crowded with rowdy teens, but I haven't had a problem with it. I am a girl and I went there when I was 19 & again when I was 21...didn't have any problems at all. When I went to school there, the biggest problems were budget (it is REALLY expensive there), traffic (which is awful) and that literally nothing is in English. St.Peterburg has more crime than Moscow and it is mainly targeted towards foreigners. Normally, skinheads target Jewish, Black, and non-ethnic Russians...I think I look Jewish, but thankfully, i have never had a problem there either. If you go farther East, you shouldn't have a problem. Most people have not met many Americans (let alone foreigners) and are happy to have you in their city. Just be aware of your surroundings and be cautious, as in any big city.

I was one. Unless your Russian is good, rethink it. From the educational process it is a great experience, and the friends you make will be friends for the rest of your life. Russia itself is a difficult place for any single woman, including ladies born there. It is the culture and the expectations. Please do not travel alone (ever), I would give the same advice to anyone traveling there. If you are worried now, it won't get any better. Rethink your foreign exchange location, you'll be a lot happier.

Since you don't know how to use the SHIFT key, I wouldn't recommend that you study languages (it might not be your thing). Russia is cold and has some of the harshest climate of any inhabited place on Earth. It does have some culture however, but Russian culture is a lot different than American culture, in America you have football, in Russia you have ballet. You might want to study Russian history here in America first before you go there.
