How to address a letter to Russia from the UK?

  • Hi, Every site I look at gives conflicting advice about how to address a letter to Russia from the UK. Can anyone please advise on the best format to use. Please only answer this if you have genuine first hand experience of sending to a Russian address from the UK. I really don't need any more ambiguity to confuse the issue more. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Ok here we go all in Russian Cyrillic except country name (or both) full name (to whom you are writing) business name (if applicable) Street address post code, city name Russia

Since I successfully sent a few letters from the UK to Russia before I think I have that "genuine first hand experience" you are asking for. So, I write the Russian address in Latin letters clearly indicating that the letter is sent to RUSSIA on the left side of an envelope's front (right under stamps, don't forget about them LOL) - it's for a British mail handler. The British mail handlers are usually immigrants (no offence to anyone), so be sure you have your "Russia" written clearly. On the right side of the envelope I write the same address in Russian Cyrillic letters - this is for the Russian handler. If you don't know the Russian alphabet don't worry - they can read Latin letters all right. On the back side of the envelope I write the usual phrase "If undelivered, please return to: (my address in the UK).

I receive a lot of letters in Russia and I have to notice that English is acceptable enough. For example Russia 113326 Moscow Ul. Stroiteley d. 15 korp. 2 kv. 46

Good question. Any letters i have sent have always arrived no problem when i just put the address on written in English. but that might just be because of the numberd postcode. To be honest though if you can find a way to write the address in cyrillic somewhere it will make it much easier for anyone delivering the letter who can not speak or read English
