You didn't say how many people (if any) are traveling with you. I strongly suggest apartment instead of hotel. Key "Saint Petersburg apartments" into Google and start wading through the many offerings. Stay as close as possible to the length of Nevsky Prospekt between the Winter Palace and Gostiny Dvor. Go to all the museums and churches you can, the summer palace at Peterhov, the war memorials, the cruiser Aurora, and the Peter and Paul Fortress. Allow at least a full day for the Hermitage only - you won't see everything by far, but you will get the idea. Travel on the Metro, shop in Gostiny Dvor, eat at Mechta Molohovetz, ride the canal gondolas, watch all the draw bridges raise at night, Walk along Nevsky Prospekt and the Neva River and the canals to watch the other people. The average temperature will be about 10ºC, so wear warm clothing. Because bigotry is a fact of life in Russia, you must be very cautious. Stay in a group, do not walk away from central areas at night, try to keep a low profile. The racial problems aren't as bad in Piter as they are in most of the country, but you must be cautious. Take the same precautions you would in any city, to prevent cheating or theft. Be much more cautious to prevent racially motivated attacks. Forget about Moscow - you don't have enough time to see one city - the travel time to the 2nd one is a total waste.

Just forget about Moscow!) When you will arrive in St. Petersburg (not Petalburg, by the way. actually "St. Petersburg" means "Saint Peter's City") you will not want to leave it for Moscow) The temperature in the end of September will be around 10-15. So bring the sweaters and jackets with you.

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online... otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

If you're interested in the historical side of it, maybe visit places such as the Yusupov Palace (where Rasputin was murdered), and Peter and Paul's Fortress (the Cathedral in there houses the bodies of all the Romanovs, the last ruling family of Russia). Peterhof is outside of the city, and is a very ornate palce. Also outside of the city, in the town of Pushkin, is Tsarskoye Selo, another palace. Church on the Spilled Blood is another must see. If you're more interested in the cultural side, then the Hermitage is a must. It's basically a huge art collection, housed inside 6 different buildings, one of these being the Winter Palace. About Moscow. I went to Russia about 6 weeks ago. We flew into Moscow, and got an overnight train from Moscow to St. Petersburg, and spent the rest of the trip there. So I would imagine you could get the overnight train to Moscow, have a day in Moscow, and then get the train back to St. Petersburg. Seeing Moscow in one day would be hard, but you could get all the main sites in, such as Red Square, Moscow Metro etc. And that's plenty of time to see St. Petersburg in, I was only there for 2 full days, and I packed loads in. It's all about managing your time, and knowing where you want to go next. :) Hope you have fun when you go!
