What is the reasoning for riding the trans-siberian railroad?

  • I live in Massachusetts and take Amtrak to DC all the time. It's a little more than a seven hour ride and i prefer it to flying. But to get from point A to point B, why would you ride a train for almost 6 days? If you have ridden the trans-siberian, how did you entertain yourself? What do you eat. You must be bored to death.

  • Answer:

It's an adventure is the main reason why someone would ride the trans siberian railroad out of choice, rather than necessity. You certainly can catch up on your sleep and just relax, read books, play cards, look out the window and also meet a lot of people. You will be sleeping less than two feet from total strangers, which seems a bit strange at first, but it does give you a chance to get to know someone new. The scenery changes as you go along, except as you go through the Taiga, which is just forest that goes on seemingly forever. There is no need to hurry because you can't. In terms of food, most people actually bring the bulk of their food with them, so be prepared to eat a lot of freeze dried soups and noodles, canned goods and the like. There is always a large urn of boiling water on each car, so you can use it with your dried foods or to make coffee or tea. At each of the stops there are also Babushkas selling some sort of food or dried fish, berries, etc. You don't have to worry about starving. I think that I can say with confidence however that after reaching Vladivostok you will fly back to Moscow, and not take the train.

To go by train is a way of travelling, to go by air is a cattle transport... I think it could be a great experience. It's probably a good idea to bring a few books, though...

At first railroad was built in 19 century and made transferring of goods more fast then by sea,it connected Mandzhuria(north China) which was colony of Russia and russian Far East with Europe and if you will use just air it would be overload,USA dont connecting Asia with Europe, roads not overload as in Russia...

It is cheaper than flying that's why people ride a train for 6 days. Or if you are afraid of flying. Yes, it is boring. Trains have "car-restaurants", and you can get something to eat on each stop.
