Is Russia considered a European country or Asian country?
-
I thought Russia was a European country but I'm not sure.

Answer:
Russia has its historical core as well as most of its population (74%), economic activity and political institutions (such as its capital city) in Europe, yet geographically most of the territory (77%) is actually in Asia. By most definitions, Russia straddles Eurasia. At 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi) and with 142 million people, Russia is by far the largest country in the world, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth’s land area, and ninth-largest by population. It extends across the whole of northern Asia and 40% of Europe, spanning 11 time zones and incorporating a great range of environments and landforms.

Most of the population lives in the European part of Russia and even a bigger part of the population is ethnically European. Siberia is just one big permanent colony, eventhough by area it's bigger then the western part. Historically Russia spread from the West, conquering the indigenous tribes in the way (I don't think there was much to conquer since it's so sparsely populated). So to sum it all up, geographically Russia is both European and Asian. Culturally and historically, Russia is European.

Most of the people are living in the European Part of Russia So the country is to be considered european though the bigger part is in Asia but that part is less populated. Geographically the border between Europe and Asia is the Ural mountains and the coasts of the Caspian and Black sea. Throughout history Russia considered itself European it is only under Soviet Rule this was changed. Edit:Whoever gave thumbs down doesn't know Russia and Russian History it is not a question of opinion but of historical and geographical facts.
ahhhhhh i don't know what they are talking about but russia is 100% hands down Europien

In Russian schools they are taught that there is a single Eurasian continent, not two half continents. (Ever wonder all the continents are surrounded by sea, except Asia and Europe? Its because racist 19th century geographers didn't want to share a continent with the Chinese and the Indians.) Russia is a Eurasian country.

Well Russia as a federation is in both the continents, but from the European Russian Federation borders to the Ural Mountains it's usually called the real Russia and from the Ural Mountains to the Aleutian islands and the Pacific Ocean, t's called Siberia. So I would define Russia the European part of Russia(the entire federation)and Siberia the Asian part of the entire federation.

Geographically, most of Russian territory is in Asia. Culturally, it's European rather than Asian. Demographically, it is very much mixed. I would say it's useless to try to classify Russia as either European or Asian. Russia is a world in itself, really.

You put the finger in one of the most debated theme, on which even Russians are opposed - it began with the XVIIIth century - But another fact also is no only the soil consideration, but also the ethnic consideration - which maybe explains so much controverse - take EG the Republic of Tatars, go there and observe - then you'll tell me if Russia west of Ural is european, even on a supposedly european territory - For Russians the thing is still more complicated, when they now have to consider the European Union, of which they feel completely excluded - and this for probably long - The more satisfying answer consists in fact, in asking Russians themselves - and their more credible answer is "Russia is Russian" and wherever we put our asses becomes Russian - and this was probably the more credible in the history of their 3 last centuries - between 1700 and 1942 -
