Why does USA people think when in Portugal is the same than to be in Morocco or another Arabian country?
-
Its true we have some arabian culture. Like in Spain (the strongest) Italy, Greece and south of France in some spots. I run a shop for tourists in Lisbon and USA people is the only one trying to bargain until such a point of being unpleasant and go out the door living behind the chosen goods. I'm the seller and the owner. I'm never rude to anyone and I understand all culture differences coming in. Makes me richer person all that knowledge.. I'm polite, helpful and kind no matter who's in front of me. Everyone deserves respect no matter were they come from. Lately Lisbon/Portugal is the Fashion City destination for the third year in the French Magazine of Destinations. So we are prepared to get people from everywhere but USA tourists are not new to us. Never were. This days there is another kind of USA travellers by the thousands . Arrive in cruise boats of 12 stages and they are quite ignorant and rude. If they have so much money how can they be so ignorant and have such a lack of manners! Money buys education and manners are manners and no matter were you are you must behave coz you are representing your own country. Year's ago USA people were not so many but very cultivated people still reach and extremely polite. I'm writing this because 15m ago I had.... to unpack 5 items...... because a rude guy just got out of the door without paying because I made no discount when I told him from the beginning there would be no discount. This only happened with USA rich people. Sorry but its my personal experience everyday. Do you bargain Wine or a hand painted ceramic decoration piece is the States??????? To live the things behind already packed for present was the first time. Indignation that's what I feel. The guy in his 35(about) old enough to be my son, so the others with him. What the hell is this????????? It's true you can bargain in Arabian countries but even so there is a sensible limit for barging. Why does USA people thinks Portugal is a country you can bargain no matter what no matter were and we are Arabians?????. Well some suppose are in Spain when in Lisbon but that we got use to it:)

America is a rich country but they don't have better education then Portugal, they're also knowed for being rude. Nao penses que por a America ser um pais rico os seus habitantes tem mais ou melhor Escola que Portugal. e maneiras e coisa que falta a muitos Americanos.

I'm sorry you are going through this with US tourists. I honestly have no idea where Americans would get the idea that they can haggle there or that Portugal is anything like an Arabian country. I am American and think of Portugal as being a European country with European standards. The only thing I have read in any travel magazines is that Portugal is less expensive than many other European countries, but never read about haggling there. Also, in USA, haggling is not normal in most places. Some cities do have open markets, but in general we don't haggle here. I never haggled when I was in Europe as it never even crossed my mind. In the Middle East and Asia the shopping is completely different and it's quite obvious that you can haggle. I really cannot imagine where they are getting these ideas and it's ashame you have to deal with arrogant attitudes on top of that.

People can bargain in Portugal but there are limits and places to do it, the most of them are not portuguese stores. I guess we have to change the famous "não se fia" to " não se regateia"

of course this isnt like all people from the US. I would assume you simply had bad luck with US tourists.
