Is Portugal a good travel destination?

Can I travel in Portugal without speaking Portuguese?

  • I think Portugal is a lovely country with a rich heritage. I really want to see Portugal for real instead of just in pictures and video. My problem is that my Portuguese is extremely limited; I've had 1 semester of college level and some private study in the language. I don't want to be just another annoying English speaker talking in a loud voice, but at the same time I know I can't learn every language in the world. Is it possible to travel around Portugal with only minimal Portuguese, or is that just unrealistic? People who live there or have traveled there, you could really help me out with your experience and knowledge. Thank you! Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, I have posted a similar question in the Spain section.

  • Answer:

I think so! Most portuguese from urban areas have, at least, minimal knowledge of english. The language has been number 1 foreign language in school for quite a few years now. If you want to venture in more rural areas, english speakers will decrease. However, given that you know some portuguese, i think you will be alright. In case you decide to come, enjoy your trip!

Of course. You can travel anywhere without speaking the language. Usually people want to understand you. If you know some words you have many work done. Don't worry, only travel, and enjoy the experience. If you feel more secure, you can get a guide, and a "mini" dictionary. You improve your portuguese!!

Yes of course you can.

Absolutely yes. The Portuguese are so friendly that if you need a translater, they will go and find someone who speaks English. However, just trying to speak the language would be very appreciated as a friendly gester. Asking persons who are between ages 11-50 is your best bet. Besides English being the most popular foreign language in school, American movies are very popular and have done much to spead the English language (although not always good grammar) because they are not translated. Definitely do not speak loudly. Portuguese are quiet and soft spoken. Be polite and ask for help when you need it. You will get lots of help. The best of Portugual is its people. Translating gagets are light weight and inexpensive and will help you improve your language skills . If you are bringing a computer, use translate.google.com. However, neither will be necessary for traveling. Have a great trip.

Sure, here you'll find many people who can speak english. Well, even if you find some who can't, surely they will try to understand what you're saying and help in what they can. Portuguese ppl are nice :)

Most people in Portugal can understand and speak at least a litlle bit of english. There will be no problem. Nice holidays;)

Yes you can. Most people speak english so if wont be able to speak portuguese just a bit someone will definitely understand if you speak in english. Just wondering something- why would you write this -"Oh, and in case you're wondering, yes, I have posted a similar question in the Spain section" - Portugal DOES NOT belong to Spain. They are our brothers not "owners". @justarandomguy - I don't think you are portuguese saying that we are a dumb country.

I'm sure you can... But before you go, you should look a few words up on the dictionary, some that you wil need a lot, for example: how much is this, how to get to... If you need any help with the portuguese just ask me. I'm brazilian and we also talk in portuguese...
