Parking in holland over Easter?
-
Off to holland on friday ans was wondering about parking and traffic. It's a driving holiday. In the cities are there car parks to park in or is it all on street parking? Is the traffic horrendous everywhere? are there times to avoid driving? Any tips are really appreciated. Cheers

Answer:
Ouch :0) Cars and cities are not really compatible in the Netherlands. I am not really familiar with Utrecht as I have only visited there ever by public transport, so I never really looked for parking possibilities. Maastricht is not so bad. There is street parking and also car parks, and I never had a "big" problem parking there - although admittedly I never visited during Easter. On the opposite scale is Amsterdam and that is quite frankly a nightmare with the car, so I would definately consider parking outside of Amsterdam and getting public transport in. I use to travel with my son as a baby. The only advice I would give is to make sure you have a buggy/stroller which you can collapse easily, as of the tram is busy you will need to put it down quickly to take it onboard. I had a buggy which had the maxi-cosi (baby car seat part) included so I could take him in and out of the buggy easily without disturbing him The best thing to do is to look at parking your car at one of the Park & Ride car parks, and then included in your ticket is the return trip by public transport so it is perfect. I answered a question about this a few days ago with the links and comments, so you can read the details here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkQYFZOD77fNrG28KLdY1Pzty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090406040759AAeZ0Td&show=7#profile-info-HWJfjiOaaa Hopefully someone can give you a bit extra info about Utrecht specifically. P.S. - Your spelling was correct btw :0)

Bla Bla's answer is good. I will just add info about Utrecht. Parking in the center of town is nearly impossible. Since the center isn't so big, you could better travel with the train. The train station (Utrecht Centraal) is nearly in the center and then you can walk around the city.

Excellent choice of cities, horrible to use a car. In general: the more beautiful the city, the more horrendous to park your car. Train, metro, tramway and busses are good in Amsterdam. In comparison with other countries the public transport is very good. Even with a baby. Utrecht is as bad for parking as Amsterdam, I have enclosed a P+R-site. But the train is a good alternative. Maastricht is good, but in the centre you have to park in a underground Parking, so it is expensive. In addition I would like to add a few helpfull links for car users: http://www.bereikbaaramsterdam.nl/live/main.asp?subsite_id=23 Amsterdam http://www.penrutrecht.nl/ P+R Utrecht http://www.maastrichtbereikbaar.nl/page.php?pagID=33&previewsitID=22 Maastricht And for Public transport: use this one: http://journeyplanner.9292.nl/
