Best Coffee shops in Amsterdam?

I would like to know the best coffee shops to visit in Amsterdam. What I mean by the best, is that I would like to know which one has the best deals and best quality "products" because I am going for my 18 birthday and I want to live the way you can only live in Amsterdam

I just got back from Amsterdam! God I love that city.. Soooo beautiful! I got a wicked deal on ebookers.com.. For flights and hotel (I stayed at the Hem Hotel, Amsterdam) I only paid 400 dollars for 2 people for 4 nights. I will say one thing though.. prices have skyrocketed thanks to that crappy fiat currency the Euro. On average its about 10 Euro for one meal. They charge for refills on drinks and things too which is annoying but oh well. The coffeeshops were the main reason I went there. They try to keep the prices down for us happy tourists but unfortunatly when they banned tobacco they caused alot of problems and many many shops are closing. Hell even half the red-light district was gone. Your lookin at about 10 Euros for a gram of some delicious bud so thats about standard pricing still. As long as you go in the off season.. (now till about april/may) you should be able to find some decent travel deals. Make SURE you dont pay for Taxis. As soon as you get there get a tram card. Trams take you everywhere for about 5 euros per day. I wish I knew that the first time because I wasted like 70 euros when it would have only cost me 20 euros for an unlimited travel card. Any more questions then just let me know.. Im full of answers :) Have fun in Dam! Smoke one for me mate! :) Oh and I almost forgot! my favorite coffeeshop was called Rookies. When I was there they had a little guidebook called "The smokers guide to Amsterdam" That little book made my trip 10x better. It had maps, coupons, important information, etc. So glad I saw it and bought one. I heard they sell them in alot of shops but I cant name any other then Rookies. You should go there and pick one up, youll be glad you did. :) I took some picks of my trip and put them on my myspace. check em out and it may give you some ideas. :) www.myspace.com/LaraStarr420

I personally found them to be pretty much the same. Just different music and different settings. Otherwise, the prices seemed similar enough. It was also incredibly cheap, much cheaper than here, so it wasn't really a big deal to go looking for the cheapest stuff. That was back around 2004, I'm not sure how much it's changed now.

If you want to "live the way you can only live in Amsterdam" then actually you will find many people not "living" in a coffeeshop. Tourists spend a lot more time in Amsterdam centre coffeeshops than locals anyway. If you are genuinally interested then it is best to ask these kind of questions on a more specific forum such as http://lem.localinet.co.uk/phpBB2/ where there are locals and regulars to coffeeshops there and they can give you first hand advice.

If you really are serious about ' live like the way you can only live in Amsterdam ' - we expect you to learn dutch before you even consider coming here. Otherwise, you will not be able to do what you want as described above. I do not have experience in coffee shops, but i do know, from people that have, that you should not visit the Bulldog or the Grashopper - as they are very tourist trap like, and too expensive. And, if this is the only reason you want to come here - better stay home. We have enough druggies here without you adding to them.
