What's a good vacation place to stay in Amsterdam?

  • My friends and I are planning a trip to Amsterdam (summer of 2010). We are all late 20's there is a mix of married couples, bf/gf, and singles. There will be 4-6 people. What is a good place to stay? Our only real criteria is: safe, clean, and easy access to interesting places. We all have good paying jobs but don't want to pay an arm and a leg however. I'm thinking 3.5 to 4 stars. Any good ideas?

    Get a (public transport) map of The Netherlands - and see what cities are close enough to Amsterdam for you. Within easy reach (i.e. around 30 minutes by train or less) you could find: Haarlem, Zaandam for possible places to stay. Within 60 minutes - your choices are larger: Hoorn, Purmerend, Alkmaar, Hilversum, Zandvoort (also busy), Hoofddorp, Leiden. You`ll have plenty of choice - but given the rather late stage in which you are planning you will need some luck finding a decent price.

It's very late to plan a trip this summer to Amsterdam. Since summer is the tourist season you'll probably be paying quite a bit particularly at this late date. Renting an apartment worked out well for me since I was there for an extended vacation in March. Perhaps that might be an option for you and your friends? Just a suggestion.
