Answer:
There is no simple answer to your question. I will answer it in general terms, in terms that will not only apply to Greece but in every country on earth. I will cite examples and will strive not to be biased. At the moment, there are several non-prosperous countries that have big amounts of natural resources. But one cannot classify them as prosperous since they have big percentages of people who live in poverty and faces social and economic unrest. Compared to Greece they have far bigger challenges. These are Russia, Nigeria, Brazil, South Africa and Venezuela, among others. Russia has huge oil reserves, big farmlands and other minerals; so are Nigeria and Venezuela. South Africa has the world’s largest diamond reserves and lots of farmland and wild life. Brazil has plenty of cattle and huge farms and other resources. Yet these countries are not necessarily considered prosperous. As a matter of fact they find themselves in a constant struggle to maintain national stability. On the other end of the scale are countries like Finland, Singapore, Switzerland and Austria that enjoy tremendous stability and prosperity. I choosed them as examples because they lack the kind of resources of the previously mentioned countries. They seem to have in common THREE OUTSTANDING QUALITIES (caps for emphasis) which stokes the fire of their high standards of quality of life for the majority of its people. 1) These countries display a great deal of honesty in government and in their overall society. Other countries seem to be constantly mired in scandal and corruption. Crime is less, interest groups and individuals who operate above and outside the law are fairly non-existent. 2) The 2nd characteristic of these prosperous societies is that they are functioning democracies. We can pay lip service and ballot-casting every few years or so, and many less prosperous countries boast of being democracies. But are they functioning democracies? In The Bahamas, for example, there is an oversized, overbearing government, with almost dictatorial powers being ascribed to the office of the prime minister. 3) Lastly, the people of prosperous countries mentioned above put a premium on quality education for all...and the result shows in the productivity of their people. The Bahamas as an example again here, though it devotes a large portion of its national budget to education, the results shows an educated citizenry which are far deficient. So what should Greece do? Greece, like most countries--- has unsustainable commitments on retirement incomes. A staged increase in retirement and pension ages, as has been done in Australia, is a reasonably credible way of constraining future growth in expenditure without too much adverse impact in the short run. An increase in the ratio of tax revenue to national income should be realized over time. That suggests a commitment to raise the VAT rate gradually over several years, with the extra revenue being reserved to debt service. On the income tax side, the most credible would be to raise revenue by a vigorous action against tax avoidance and evasion. Unlike the case of standard government bonds, there is no need to preserve access to this kind of borrowing in the future. As a matter of fact action to ensure that no future government can borrow in this hidden fashion is recommended. These deals should be renegotiated to reduce the burden they impose, with the threat of repudiation/default in the absence of a satisfactory agreement. And lastly, Greece has to find another prominent and illustrious statesman as well as a charismatic leader...like Eleftherios Venizelos. You asked a serious question and asked for a serious answer...so there it is.

Interesting question, have a star. You are going to have to go through some pain in the short term to balance your books. As the "Home of Democracy", you have to find decent honorable people to vote for, which can take your nation forward. Professional politicians are no use, they just want power, and will do anything to your country to keep it. Read "The Prince" by Machiavelli and consider his solution.

In my opinion economic crises will get worse and it might even lead Greece into a civil war.

Stealing by politicians did not cause the Greek economic crisis, any money stolen was peanuts compared with the economy of a country. OK it was bad to steal but the problem is the state of the Greek economy due to corruption by ordinary Greeks not only politicians. The state of the Greek economy is the fault of the Greek people, Greek industry , farming, Financial services, etc .It is Greek corruption which is the problem . Greece is 71 places down the CPI World corruption index (below) Look at the map of corruption in the link, there is a correlation between corruption level of the people and the economic situation of any country. It is no good just blaming a few politicians even very bad ones.

Very nice question and I agree so, SO MUCH with you about the pigs in Vouli! So much! My opinion is that WE WON'T get through this crisis that easily and I don't only mean Greece, I mean the whole world. It will take at least a decade and maybe two to get back to what we were and to live with the same consumptionism to rule our lives. The meaning of this crisis is CHANGE! We have to change, we all have to change our lifestyle. We have to learn how to live with less money. It is not the crisis, it is our environment which shows us that we have to STOP wearing out our natural sources. I am afraid that if we, the developed world and especially Europe, fail to adapt to the new conditions (because this is what it is about, it is not just a crisis) then the Third World War, or at least a large scale war, will be inevitable. So, the crisis is not only a Greek phenomenon.

IN all honesty.. poloticians are all the same all over the world..you cant change a zebras stripes... but the really issue here at least for greece is not how and when we will pay off the debt.. ..dont ftret aboutt hat hard work dosent kill any one..the greeks are acustomed to hard work.. and the debt will be paid off.. what we have to do as a society and not just the nationals but even us in the exteriko..make sure there is no corruption at all in greece this has to stop ..it should be punished by death and by family decemenations and property confescations....why should any one benefit from the PEOPLES MONEY? no one should and should be made an example off.... the only thing i protest is the retirment age... that is wrong... sure older people need to move about..but lets not make it by law to work till ur flesh drops off ur bone....once u made ur best contribution to society and reach the current retirment age.. then its ur god given right to take it easy and enjoy life ..and PASS THE TORCH TO THE YOUNGER PEOPLE of GREECE... they too need to retire one day..shall we have a 2 generations of hungyr starving older people in the next 2 generations, beacuse we did not let them work when they should have by incresing the retiment age? .. jobs are limited as they are in greece.. we all have the right to work hard save and retire at a sutiable age and enjoy life.. BUT ABOVE ALL THIS ABOVE I MENTIONED... WE HAVE TO KILL THE UNCLE ATTITUDE..AND THE FAKILAKI.... these 2 effilates are damaging us in every way possible...
