I only know a design hotel in a very nice neighbourhood of Athens, near teh sites. I think it is not too expensive for what it offers. Check out www.periscope.gr However, if you find that expensive, make sure you stay somewhere near Syntagma or Plaka, not in te area of Omonoia - it's not so nice over there.

If you definitely want to be IN Athens, then Marina Hotel Athens is your best bet.
