Are mobile phones in Rome cheap?

I heard the plugs (like for phones & internet) were different in europe...is this true?

  • ok so me and my best friend lishanna are graduating this year. so we decided over the summer to take a tour in europe. We will be going to: Rome, Venice, Florence, Assisi, Pompeii, Sorrento, Bari, Patras, Olympia, Delphi, and Athens. But i heard each country in europe has different plugs like the ones in the walls that we use to charge our phones, ipods, laptops, cameras, etc. is this true? and if so how are we supposed to charge all of our electronics?

  • Answer:

Chargers usually have multiple voltage 100-240V/50-60Hz. Italy and Greece use 230V/50Hz. For both countries you need the standard European plug adapter for type C with two round prongs is listed in the Source(s): http://users.telenet.be/worldstandards/electricity.htm#plugs_c http://www.220voltappliances.com/plug_adapters.html (required:GS104/GS9)

The plugs in Europe are different than the ones in America. They use a different type of electrical current and the plugs are also shaped differently to accommodate them. However, this is not a big deal. You can go to Radio Shack or Best Buy and buy a European adapter which will change the current going into your electronics and also fit into the European plugs. You probably won't be able to use your phone in Europe, and even if you do get service it will be VERY expensive. (When I was living there, I took a trip to Prague, and a 3 minute phone call cost nearly $30!) If you are planning on doing that much traveling, it might not be the best idea to take your laptop with you, because you could lose it, break it, or have it stolen.

Yes, that is true. Not only are the outlets a different shape, the electric power is different. Most European countries operate on 220 Volt 50 cycle current. You will need a power converter to use your electronic devices in most European countries.

Yes it is true. In USA you use 110 volts in electricity, in Europe we use 220 volts. Your laptops and cameras should be fine. Their power supplies are (101,111111111111% of the times) designed to work with both 110 and 220 volts, as long as you add on the plug an adapter like this one : http://www.amazon.com/International-EUR-European-Outlet-Adapter/dp/B000X43D70 Check the power supplies of your devices for specs (they do mention them). If not compatible with 220 volts (most unlikely) you will need a portable 110 to 220 volts converter like this one : http://www.familytravelgear.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/EK121bkweb.jpg Your local electrical/electronics supplies store should carry these in stock. Have a blast on your vacation! :-)

You will need a transformer and you can buy them in travel goods stores. Also do check the specs on your electronics. My laptop (Toshiba) and my shaver (Philips) work on both 110v and 220v, so the only thing one needs is a cheap adaptor for the different plugs themselves.
