Are mobile phones in Rome cheap?

Can USA Cell phones be used in Athens & Rome? How about in the Greek Isles on a cruise?

  • I will be in Athens, the Greek Isles, and Rome in a couple months, I have been told that US cell phones are useless in Europe. Is this true, or do I need to have a particular type of cell phone?

  • Answer:

I was just there last summer. The short answer is yes BUT you must check with your service provider to make sure you they offer it and your particular phone has the ability.

my cell phone does not allow me use in Greece....nor does my daughters and her husbands when they go, they have bought one over there to use when they go. Since I go every year I don't know why I haven't yet. Maybe this year I will My cell has international calling but our phones here don't work on their systems there

Make sure your phone is a tri-band GSM model and you'll have no probs in Europopland. Even when sailing the Greek islands it wasn't a problem finding a cell phone reception unless very far out. You will also need to talk to your cell phone company too - often they have international roaming / calls barred by default, so you will need to get that lifted in order to connect in Greece. Failing that, you can buy a local sim card in Greece for about $20 and use that in your phone.

The best is to check with your telephone company if the roaming works in Greece. If not you can easily buy a SIM card in Greece and use it (provided your cell phone has also GSM)

Hi, as others already mentioned, if you have a tri-band mobile phone you are fine - but need to check with your telecom provider regarding "roaming" coverage in Greece too and which Greek operator is maybe best for you to use regarding costs involved.

If you have a tri-band cellular phone model, I think you will encounter no problems. It is better to ask about that your provider, who would know to tell you all about roaming in Europe. If there is no technical way you can do it or you have to pay much money, then you can buy a cellular phone with a card (starting from 30,00€) just for the sake of communication when you set foot on Europe. Here are the major providers of cellular telephony in Greece: www.cosmote.gr www.vodafone.gr www.tim.gr www.qtelecom.gr. They all possess a very helpful client service dept. which will give you all information you need. Enjoy your trip over to Europe!

I am not absolutely sure, but i think you can use your phone here (Greece). You just have to buy a new SIM card. There are cheap companies and you can do that just for 15 Euro. So you just get a new number and friends can call you...
