How did geography affect the lives of people in ancient Greece?

  • Answer:

Much of Ancient Greece was rocky and barren and bad for agriculture. Most Greeks lived along the coast where the soil was good for farming. There were many mountains and valleys. The climate was hot and dry, and rainfall was limited to the winter months. With a shortage of land for farming, the Ancient Greeks came to rely upon trade with other city states and countries for food, building supplies, and other goods. As a result, many Greeks (even today in the modern age) are renown sailors and merchant marines. Also since the terrain was rocky and there weren't many roads in ancient Greece, most people walked when they needed to go somewhere. However, some people had horses and carts, and the richest Greeks rode on horseback. http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/education/projects/webunits/greecerome/Greecegeog1.html http://oncampus.richmond.edu/academics/education/projects/webunits/greecerome/Greeceag1.html

The Greeks learned to run good. From everything and everybody. Do you get the gist of it? Just look at the famous Marathon run of the Greek soldier Pheidippides, a messenger from the battle in Marathon who was send to Athens. And he was just to happy to bring the message.

Platypus is Greek

Once upon the time the land of today's Greece was green and fertile. The Gods from the Olympus lived in peace and understanding with the mortals below. Than the people become spoiled and greedy. Started to abuse the land and the semi-gods and their pets. The punishment was swift. The land did become inhospitable, barren and infertile. That was the case of the major Exodus of millions after million of Greeks running away from their land. The life in there is still very hard. The actual geography does not work in favor for the inhabitors. Without the tourism, the country would be death.
