Anyone been to Greece?

Has anyone seen the black flying beetles in greece?

  • Can anyone tell if they have seen black beetles which fly, in Greece? I have been to Greece alot and see these flying beetles. They are about the size of a golf ball, shiney black and usually hang around near flowers. Theres alot in Crete and i was just wondering if anyone knows what they're called?

  • Answer:

The Greek Island of Crete has many beetle species endemic to the island. Since you said it is black and not of another color or iridescent, this excludes the Cetonia Aurata, a common SCARAB beetle species in southern Europe (including Greece & Crete). http://www.arkive.org/rose-chafer/cetonia-aurata/ It could be the Japanese Beetle that have invaded the Mediterranean region thanks to wooden shipping crates containing their hidden eggs. They love eating flowers. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/load/rosesant/msg060417546745.html If you have a picture, it would be most helpful, since extact entomological idenification can be done by looking at the V-shaped groove on the back where the upper parts of the elytra (wing covers) meet as well as any distingushing marks on them. 1. http://www.backyardnature.net/insectid.htm 2. http://bugguide.net/node/view/15740
