How much is £54.00 worth in US dollars?

How much is a Greek Drachma worth in US Dollars today?

  • So we are reading Julius Ceasar in Language Arts and my teacher assigned an extra credit assignment to us for a couple points asking us to find out how much 75 drachmas would be worth in Ceasar's time. Ceasar gave all the Romans 75 drachmas. How much would 75 drachmas in Ceasar's time be worth today in US dollars...Thanks for your help! i tried looking already but all the answers were "Europe doesn't use drachmas anymore"..."they're worth nothing"...etc..

  • Answer:

Drachma is a coin used since 1100 BC continuously to our date. While Greece does not use the Drachma any more, as currency name is used in many Arab states as "Dirham" Any way to our point here. You'll have to understand that trying to figure out what is the value of a 1st Century AC Drachma in US$ is rather pointless but you can do some kind of parity comparison. So, one "regular" Attican drachma was nominal day pay for a "skilled" worker or a professional soldier. Half an Attican drachma was considered just enough for a poor family for one day. So this should give you an indication of the value of one drachma. Lets say that a skilled worker in US is paid $80 net and I would guess $40 would be just enough for a poor US family to make a day. So there 75 1st century drachmas = $6000!
