What are ancient Greek sports?

What would you consider to be the most significant achievement in modern Greek sports history?

  • 1)The 143 medals (including Olympics of 1906) which brings Greece at the 11th position worldwide in medals per capita? 2)Over 700 medals in World and Europeans championships of all kind of sports? 3)Motherland of Modern and Ancient Olympics? 4)Super Power worldwide in basketball with over 26 medals in all major competitions? 5)Football aka Euro 2004 triumph? 6)Top 3 teams in Water Polo and medals in all major competitions? 7)Sports figures which became world icons as Yannis Kouros , Pyrros Dimas , Nikos Galis etc 8)Greeks of Diaspora who became all time greats in many sports as Stan the man Longinidis , Pete Sampras , Johnny Unitas etc (Too many to name no joke) 9)Our "Dream team" ,as foreign media named it ,weightlifting team which brought a total over 300 medals from 1989-2004 at Olympics,World games and European championships? 10)Other (something of your choice) This questions has nothing to do with national pride or bigotry,it's just a question of our national modern history in sports which is SUPER GREAT,considering our small population (11 million) Thanks in advance:)

  • Answer:

I will say Basketball. And I do not refer to a specific event but Greek basket ball in its entirety Since 87 Greece was among the leaders in Basketball, and now we have come to talk about the "Greek school of basketball". with great successes everywhere Most of the major "stars" of the European basket are from Greece (I do not say Greeks) and the only reason that none plays in NBA is that US school is about show Greek (and European) school is about substance. And there is an other reason, and all of you that live in Greece or know the Greek reality can understand it: in this fu**ng country anything that is good and successful takes 10 times the effort that it would take anywhere else in the world, and it happened against all odds because some people worked hard with nothing to gain for long long time. I will not mention names because I do not presume that I know all of them.

I would go with number 4...super power in world basketball... i mean WTF! 24 MEDALS.... that is unbelivable.. . and when u say modern i dotn think any other sport is more modern than basket ball most other sports where concived even in ancient times.. so basket ball is the way to go.... ..cause we cant REALLY...produce a world class soccer team..pisses me off when maradona beat us with a single mugs shot in world cup... as far as greeks athelets being right on top of the creme de la creme..i would say professionally they just need more good backers..cause there is nothing wrong with our athletes ,there is some thign wrong with the sponsors and managers and backers.. this is why we cant get on top in the world wide scene as a respectable soccer team but ..one thing ! why dotn greeks try play rugby or base ball!... or dare i say it CRICKET...LOL i rather watch grass grow...

As a non-Greek, sorry to burst the big bubble a-building here but Johnny Unitas was born to Lithuanian immigrant parents in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1933, and grew up in the Mount Washington neighborhood (in reference to your No 8 tabulation). His unusual surname was a result of a phonetic transliteration of a common Lithuanian last name Jonaitis. Unitas was a professional American football player in the 1950s through the 1970s, spending the majority of his career with the Baltimore Colts. He was a record-setting quarterback, and the National Football League's most valuable player in 1959, 1964 and 1967. His record of throwing a touchdown pass in 47 consecutive games (between 1956-1960) remains unsurpassed as of 2009. Don't get me wrong. I admire Greek culture and its many foundational contribution to Western Civilization...but facts are facts. edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithuanian_American
