My aunt is greek and she just came to visit us 4 days ago. We asked her the same question and I'll tell you what she said straight up. If you're going to visit greek islands then go ahead, it's perfectly safe and you'll enjoy it immensely. But it's best if you avoid going to Athens. She was telling us about certain areas where she doesn't dare visit anymore because of the high theft rate going on there. She just had metal bars installed in her apartment blocking all the windows and she lives on the 4th floor in a building with security! Apparently some gangs are climbing buildings and getting in by the windows. But if you do go to Athens, tell your wife not to wear any jewelry and to watch her purse. Keep the passports locked at the hotel.
