Answer:
the best thing to do is to stay in central athens like syntagma or plaka as it the closest to most of the ancient monuments and to public transportation. The centre of Athens is not very big so most of the monuments, restaurants, bars etc located in central athens can be done on foot. Nice areas to stay are Syntagma, Monastiraki and Plaka (the nicest one being Plaka). Athens is generally safe and the areas that could be a bit dodgier do not have many hotels. Stick to Plaka... It is just below Acropole and it's very beautiful. For hotels visit www.zeus.gr/gr/guide/prefecture_of_attik… Additionally the eyewitness series of guides have an excellent guide for Athens. If you are to buy one definitely go for the eyewitness one. If you want to book a hotel online go for the octopus travel site (www.octopustravel.com). Decent to excellent hotels, very good prices... The period you will be visiting Athens is one of the hottest of the year and be prepared for some serious heatwaves (min. 36, max 42 degrees Celsious) especially in the centre of Athens. Don't let this put you off... It is wonderful, sunny and you are guaranteed the perfect tan. Have Fun....

as you are going to spent little time in athens only a hotel in the center would do. if you are not so keen on luxury but on a more or less quiet hotel with a fantastic view to the acropolis then i suggest the Acropolis View and all the touristic sights are in walking distance... it's worth it! http://www.acropolisview.gr/ (greek and english) and athens is everywhere safe even me as a girl i can walk alone in the streets at 4 a.m. but surely you always have to be aware of dogs (just kidding) and underdogs ;-) athens is an illuminated city and as bright at night as on daytime... and all the touristic locations are in the center so you really should stay in the centre...ah, and don't let handbags just hanging around your shoulder like you wouldn't at home

Hotel Arethusa is located right in Syntagma square & is clean with nice rooms and friendly staff. The breakfast is also worth the couple extra euro. Stay away from Omonia Square. There are some shady places in the red light district around there.
