I was in both Belgium and Normandy this Spring. I understand some of these things I list may be out of your comfort zone, but all information is good information right? -Fly into Brussels or Amsterdam rather than Paris these airports are generally cheaper. -if you need help finding a cheap flight do a search with kayak.com they are consistently the best at finding good rates. -There are some cheap hotels, but hostels are much cheaper, a good resource for finding hostels is hostelz.com -In Normandy I would stay in Bayeux its a the biggest town close to the beaches it has some of the absolute nicest people I have ever met and a beautiful cathedral. I was there for the anniversary of D-Day and the hostel was booked up I split a 4 person room with two other random Canadian travelers I met. When the husband of the Mom and Pop hotel saw we were all Canadians he dropped 50 euros off the price overall. -Another option for accommodation is couch surfing. Basically through the website you find someone from that area that is willing to host you on their couch for a few days. Every experience I have ever had with couch surfing was excellent. The website is couchsurfing.com this is a better option in Belgium because as memory serves there is only one couch surfing member in Bayeux. -As a backpacker I averaged 50 euros a days as a budget very easily. This included everything, food, place to stay, entertainment etc. -Any further questions I would advise you to ask your question on the forums here http://www.backpackeurope.com/index.html I'm a member and we all love to help other travelers. Any other questions feel free to email me and I'd love to help.

As a citizen of a city that was maybe liberated with the help of your father, I'd like to offer you any help you require. As I do not know what places exactly you might want to visit, I searched and found this site http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/remembers/sub.cfm?source=history/secondwar/Belgium which has a very good PDF at http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/content/history/secondwar/belgium/belgium_e.pdf describing the actions of the Canadian Army in WW2, but you probably know more than I do. My advice: For intercontinental travel : Try to find a company that allows you to fly from Canada to Paris and back from Brussels to Canada. If that is not possible, the TGV from Paris to Brussels is fast and expensive if you buy it on the spot, but can be had very cheap, if you use their special offers well in advance. For local travel : Trains run frequently between all major cities in Europe. Bus for local transportation can be very cheap or even free for retired people, but I do not know if that applies to foreigners too. For lodging: If you live in any major Canadian city, offering a bed to a European can be an incentive to offer them a place to sleep for you. Try to make friends in the places you want to go to. For food: Restaurants are probably as expensive as in you own country. Go to supermarkets and minimarkets to buy food and eat in the open if weather allows it. Contact me at "[email protected]", if you want more help, once you know where and when you want to come, just add "a_" in front of that email adress.

You're not saying which country you're in. I'm assuming UK as that is the site I am on. Someone I spoke to said to contact the British Legion. They are not just for service men or ex-service men but also for their dependants. One of their services is called Poppy Travel. More here: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/content/Poppy-Travel-508963.shtml All the best.
