How can I work by the water in Central America?

  • I am tunring 18 in august and plan on leaving around my birthday. I do not wish to stay in Montreal for the cold. I'm interested in ship work, or to work a really calm job by the water/beach side. I'm a writer, so anything interesting in a special way would satisfy me.

    Tons of people venture out like you are trying to. It's NOT easy! If you want to work beach side you can't just go anywhere like a foreign country. You have to have work permits and it's very hard to obtain those. Depends on what country you want to go to, but like I mentioned there are tons of stipulations. You would have a better chance of working on a cruise ship. The only thing is that you might need some experience such as being a server, bartender, cook, etc. . Everything in the Caribbean and Central America is all about tourism. You would have to get a job along those lines. Best of luck to you and don't ever give up on your goals/dreams!

I'll guess that you will not have a degree at that time in any sort of real trade or profession so the likelihood of you getting a job in some other country is remote at best. The central american countries have enough problems of their own with out adding unskilled immigration to the list. The only one that might accept you is Costa Rica due to the large Canadian expat population and you will need to have a job lined up before you set foot off the plane. Try the Tico Times or the Canadian Embassy for local contacts. The Embassy staff will be locals so be prepared to speak fluent Spanish. Castillian is preferred.
