What should I bring with me on my cruise?

Going on a cruise. What to bring?

  • I am going on a RC caribbean western cruise (Freedom of the seas) form Feb. 11 - 18. I need advice on what to bring? Also what can I expect? It's my first cruise!

  • Answer:

Plan to take one-carry on bag (small) per person. Pack 1 change of clothes along with anything that you will need that evening, including medicine. It can take many hours to get your luggage to your cabin. Don't pack anything breakable or valuable in your checked luggage. It sits unattended for several hours. If you take prescription meds, pack twice the amount you would need for the time period of your cruise. Pack half in your carry-on and the other half in your luggage. Make sure the meds are in original prescription containers. Get a box or two of Dramamine, just in case. Plus any other over the counter meds you take...they have an on-board gift shop but the items are pricey. Get a box of XXL Ziploc bags to carry home your yucky, sandy clothes. Mark the handles of your luggage with brightly colored yarn or plastic flag ties from the hardware store. This will make it easier for you to locate in the cruise terminal after you disembark. Don't overpack...you still have to handle your luggage to pass through customs. Take a supply of cash in $1, 5 and 10s. This is the best currency to use in the markets in the ports and pay the taxi drivers. Check in your cruise book and take enough cash to pay your tips. If you charge your tips to your on-board account, you can't "adjust" them based on the service you get. Take a power strip if you use hair dryers, curling irons, etc. The plugs are not always in the most convenient places. If you are a soda drinker, be sure to get a soda fountain card/sticker on your first day. This will save you money in the long run. If you are parking at the port, check out your local port authority’s web site for parking fees. For example, Port of Galveston charges $70 a week to park. If you are flying in/out of the departure city, don't book your return flight too early. Disembarkation/customs can take a long time.

LOTS of sunscreen and your bathingsuit...and make sure your clothes are REALLY comfortable, because you will be walking around alot. And dont spend alot on your room, because you will almost never be in there!!
