Cheap caribbean vacation for week before Christmas?
-
I'm trying to book a cheap Caribbean vacation for two (Bahamas, Virgin Islands, St. Martin, DR, or Cancun, or similar) for the week before Christmas. When I get on the websites, they advertise a price, but as soon as I enter my details (travel dates, etc.) the price quadruples. What am I doing wrong? I am willing to fly back on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day -- I thought this would make it cheaper but perhaps I am wrong? What dates would make it come up as the advertised price? I can be flexible (leaving anywhere between December 16th and 20th, coming back anywhere between 20th and 25th). Which dates/destinations would give me the best deals? Also, any recommendations as to specific destinations? Or places to book other than the websites that I have had the above mentioned problems with? I just want it to be simple! Thanks :)

Answer:
It depends on where you're departing from and I'll see what I can do to help. I went to Barbados for about 2 weeks from Toronto for $675.00 CAD before Christmas in 2004. So try to book flights earlier, before they go up. And remember, airfares change everyday. If you have a credit card, you could always check http://www.kayak.com/ although I never used it - Because I don't own a credit card but I've used it to search.

Okay this is what you do. First, decide the cheapest places to travel to. I recommend: Puerto Plata in the DR, Montego Bay or Negril Jamaica, and select places in Mexico. Next, you plan the vacation using orbitz, expedia, travelocity. Once you have a general idea for prices you then can plan better where you want to go but that is not where you stop. You next find promotional coupons (search google) for the travel sites you are using and input those into for example orbitz and check out the new prices. Orbitz seem to have the best deals but don't forget to change your airport and travel dates. Some discounts that may be of interest to you: AAA= great travel and airfare rates. Entertainment guide= 50% off a large number of hotels as well as 5% off American Airlines. Now, once you find a hotel you think is a good deal, check the reviews using trip advisor. It may sound like a lot of work but it will be fun and if you have any questions or need help let me know. I enjoy planning trips and usually find great deals. My best deal yet was 5 nights in the Dominican at a 5star all inclusive ocean view for 550. I hope you find a better one. Good Luck!

The prices always go up a lot during Christmas. Try getting airfare using American Air using flexible date search, then book your hotel separately. I got really cheap airfare through them to Jamaica for this New Years holiday. LAX to MoBay for $409, but I got the tickets about a month ago. High season starts in December and continues for a few months. The most economical time to travel to the Carribean is during the months of June through August.

For Caribbean destinations, December is fairly low-priced UNTIL you get to Christmas, then the price skyrockets. It continues to stay inflated from that point on (though some weeks will probably drop lower than Christmas). It's all demand-based (not just airfare, but land rates go up). If there is any way you can go a week earlier, you will probably find very low rates.
