Has anyone retired in the Dominican Republic and obtained residency there?

Can anyone tell me how I can travel overland to Haiti and back from the Dominican Republic?

  • What are some travel agencies I can take advantage of once in the Dominican Republic? Where can I leave from? Will my passport be stamped when going into Haiti or coming back? Or not at all? Can I return to the Dominican Republic in the same day or will I need to overnight in Haiti? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

OK, it depends on where in the DR you will be going from. If you are going from somewhere on the north coast, you should probably go through Dajabon. Best bet is to stay in a nice little town called Montecristi the night before you travel and get a really early start in the morning. Stay at Chic Hotel or Montechico (right on the water). Go early in th morning to Dajabon - about 20 minutes by car. You will have to exit the DR and cross over the bridge at Rio Massacre, and buy another tourist card for Haiti in Quanaminthe (Juana Mendez). Don't take your car over. If you need a taxi on the other side - ask for a guy named Gigi and he can taxi you to wherever. If you are going to Cape Haitian, I reccommend staying at Mont Joli. It is not cheap, but the best place to stay. If you go back the same day, be aware that the border closes at 4, and there is a 1 hr time difference. You will need to buy another tourist card when you cross back over into Dajabon. Excercise caution, but Haitians are nice for the most part - actually more hospitible than some dominicans. If you just want to hang out in Quanaminthe, you can come back the same day no problem. Buy a bottle of the world's best rum Barabancourt while you are there. If you just want a peek, go to Dajabon on a monday or a friday, and they have the Haitian market, and the border guards will let you walk out on the bridge without "exiting" and "entering the DR again. Alternatively (not for the faint of heart), you may be able to find someone in Montecristi with a boat. Go really early to Ft. Liberte or Caracol, hang out until 12 or 1 pm, and scoot back over. No one will know you were gone. Snorkeling in Caracol is nice. Enjoy! P.S. I never crossed in the south

Probably walk in a NW direction. Some of my colleagues work in Haiti, one was abducted and now is too scared to return, another only goes out in the office armed car and another who worked there for two weeks, thought every night the hotel was going to be stormed by the violet and angry mob outside. By all means go to to Haiti but dont exect to return. Oh, also they have the highest indidence of HIV in the caribbean.
