Do I need a passport to work on a cruise ship?

Do I need a passport if I don't plan to leave the ship on a Caribbean Cruise?

  • I'm getting married in Oct and we are taking a cruise together to St Martin/St. Thomas in the Caribbean. I don't like traveling and there isn't much that I want to see on the islands. I'm sick of the hastle of trying to get a passport and am wondering if I need one if I DON'T leave the ship. Thank you to one and all for your help.

  • Answer:

If you are from the US and the cruise departs from and returns to the US then you don't need a passport, just state issued ID. Plus St. Thomas is a US territory so you don't need a passport even to fly straight there.

Yes, everyone on the cruise must have a passport. Prior to boarding the ship, they take your passport to give to the customs agents at each port-of-call. At the end of the cruise, you get it back.

You need to show your passport PRIOR to getting on the ship.

Well, you may change your mind and want the freedom to leave the ship. Also, many cruise lines are requiring all passengers to have a passport you need to call the cruise line or your travel agent and ask aout this. Also, If you apply now, you should get your passport in time...especially if you pay the extra $60.00 to have it expedited. See the website below for info on getting a passport if you find you will need it for the cruise.

It does not matter if you stay on board or go ashore. Documents are required at the time of boarding period. How on Earth would they know who had one and who did not when they arrived in port other than locking you in your cabin! another point.....To travel to St. Thomas and not go shopping is a crime! LOL Hey at least take the ferry to St. John and see where God would live if her had money! St. Martin is like visiting two countries, one half of the Island is French and the other side is Dutch! Two for the price of one! Don't stay on board in these great ports! If you have already decided NOT to get off a cruise ship in these wonderful ports then my suggestion is to go to Orlando or Vegas. No passports required there! Then you can just stay in your room!

I thinnk you need a passport to get on the ship, you need a passport for air and sea but not driving across borders until next year

whats the point of going on a cruise if you arent going to get off the ship...are you crazy? You dont want to experience other cultures...you dont want to see things you wouldnt normally see in america.....and getting a passport really isnt much of a hassle....you just get your pic taken at walgreens or somewhere...take the pictures and your birth certificate to the post office along with your ID..and money...and that is that...they mail it off and you get you passport in a couple of months. You will have to check with the cruise line as to what their polices are. I didnt need one when I went...but that was 3 years ago before they changed all the passport rules....so ask the cruise line...and get off the ship...you are missing out on a lot!

Get one anyway jsut for sure, you never know what might happen and if theres some weird rule change before then you're gonna want it. I got one a ways back just because, and then when I needed it I didn't have to go running out to get one.
