What is it like working on a cruise ship?

  • Tell me everything. Pay. Living. Hours. Can you chill with the other passengers when your off?? Everything.

  • Answer:

Um.. you have watched 'TITANIC" too many times.. the ONE THING that will bring the hounds of hell down on your head is mixing with the passengers, unless that is part of your job... you do NOT socialize with the passengers... That being said, working on a Cruise ship is an entirely different world. I did it twice, for 2 contracts of 6 months each and loved it, but it's not for everyone. Depending on the cruise line you will be on the ship, nearly constantly, for 4 to 6 MONTHS at a time. The hardest work is when the ship is in some port because that is when most of the passengers are off the ship and you can get things done without having to worry about passengers being in the way. Pay is POOR.. you have to realize it's a 24/7 lifestyle and MINIMUM WAGE dos not apply.. so pay depends on the ship, but typically about $400 a week. On the other hand, your FOOD and UNIFORMS are FURNISHED.. so you don't have a real cost of living. Most Cruise ships have small cabins with 2 employees in them. The newer, larger ships have slightly larger rooms than the old ones.. but they are still the size of a jail cell. Mainly, you need to realize you are there to WORK and not to socialize with anyone but the other workers. Cruise ships are designed to keep the LOWER LEVEL EMPLOYEES separated from the PASSENGERS.. so if you think it's going to be like "TITANIC' then you won't last too long The crew has their own area to eat, live and socialize and are expected to stay there when off duty.

Cruise Line Job is a great job, especially for a young, single person who wants to see the world.
