24 year old male looking to move to Virgin Islands (St. Thomas) for a year or so to unwind and relax?
-
Hi, I am 24 years old and graduated from a film college about 2 years ago. I recently was layed off and just cant seem to find myself. I am under a lot of pressure and just want to take a break and try something new for a while. I have spoken to a lot of people about moving to the Virgin Islands. I am thinking about moving to St. Thomas in particular. I currently live in Miami, Florida. From what I've been mostly told the cost of living will be about the same in certain aspects but way off in others then up here. I plan on moving with about 4k in cash, no car. I tended bar and served tables at a fine dining restaurant while in college. Basically, I really would like to just get away for a year (maybe more) and relax. Enjoy life. I've been to the Virgin Islands and although its not the hectic city lifestyle im accustomed to, I really do enjoy it. I like the culture and overall atmosphere. I have a very good resume and am talented and have many capabilities. Whether it be film production and/or technology, Hospitality, Business Management. So whether I can somehow figure out a way to get a "real" job or just working at a resort, marina, restaurant or bar. With the money I am bringing I am figuring that I will have a small buffer to explore for a little and find a good area to settle in. I am extremely independent and motivated. Not lazy by any means. I guess my main questions are; Where are good areas to look around? Where are the happening location? Like I said i'm 24 years old and like to work hard and play hard. Any advice on jobs or places where I will have a better shot at getting a job? You said housing was costly... Is it hard to get into a place? Deposits etc.? Would it be a lot more beneficial to convince a friend to come? How much is an average hotel or by the week motel I can stay at until im fully situated? Financially will I be able to make it on a bartender/Servers salary? Is St. Thomas the best island for people, resorts, entertainment? Any advice what so ever would help! Thanks so much for taking the time to read this Alec -- -AWE-

Answer:
Check out the link I posted in my source. You'll find the answer to a lot of your questions there. I can tell you that $4K would probably cover your housing expenses for about 4-6 months if your lucky. The cost of living is very high here and you'd be lucky to find an apartment or a studio around $750 a month. It would be advisable to start with the job hunt and then look for a place nearby so you don't have to spend a lot of time and money traveling to work. Check out the other links I've posted too.
