Best place to surf in san juan puerto rico?

Is San Juan, Puerto Rico a good place to live?

  • Well, I joined the Air National Guard a while ago and am wanting to transfer to a base in PR. There is three different bases in PR located specifically in San Juan, Carolina, and Mayaguez. I wanted to find a place in the San Juan and Carolina area but, I wanted to know are these places nice to live in? If you don't know spanish, will you learn it there or get more acquainted with it? Where would be the best place to live to find a low price for rent? How should I prepare myself for going there if I have never visited there? I'm planning to move sometime during late next year and I'm trying to get all the information possible to help me know more when I get there. Your help is much appreciated :)

Hey. I see some of your other questions & you are trying to learn spanish so that is great because you will need it. But you will find that some of the people in PR know atleast a little english. I am not sure of the wages of someone in the national guard so I cant really tell you where you can afford to live. San Juan & Carolina are right next to each other & Mayaguez is 3 hours away on the west coast. Both San Juan & Mayaguez are cities in PR, but San Juan is a much bigger city. So decide what type of lifestyle you like better. Of course San Juan has more crime but it also has more nightlife & stores, etc. But you will find that PR is a great place & since its a US territory you will find most of the conviniences of home as well. In San Juan & Mayagues you can get a place really cheap. But to get a nice place in a nice area you will pay more in San Juan. Some of the nicer parts of San Juan are Ocean Park, parts of Carolina, Isla Verde & Condado (lots of tourist though). & some of the parts you need to be careful of are some parts of Rio Piedras, Santurce & hato rey. The best thing for you to do is to go visit like you said. Spend a few days in San Juan & Carolina & rent a car so you can drive through neighborhoods & then drive to Mayaguez & do the same. The west coast is more laid back I can tell you. You can look for a place on this website: http://www.clasificadosonline.com/

First of all... as a PRIVATE you will not be able to afford the rents in Puerto Rico.. so whatever base you go to... and YOU won't be the one to pick it.. you need to plan to LIVE ON BASE. If you aren't leaving for a few months then you have enough time TO LEARN SOME SPANISH.. unless you are like the typical AmeriKan who believes they will just pick it up in a few minutes.... AmeriKans are very delusional when it comes to learning languages... among OTHER THINGS..

You can definately survive in San Juan perfectly well. If not, there is a base in Bayamon (5-10 mins away from SJ) and Carolina also about 5-10 minutes away. Actually Carolina IS PART of the Metro Area (San Juan). The most expensive areas of San Juan are Santurce (condado area) (next to carolina). Isla verde (Carolina), Guaynabo (South SJ) Etc. There are affordable places everywhere in SJ though. When I say Guaynabo and Isla verde, Caroline etc, they are all part of SJ. I am from Hato Rey (Center SJ) and go to Carolina in 10 minutes depending where. Peace

My best bet would be San Juan, which is where I live. I find Carolina a little ghetto & Mayaguez is mostly a college town. Most people in the island speak some spanish so you don't have to worry too much.
