I would highly suggest The Marriott San Juan Resort & Stellaris Casino Just returned from a 10 day stay at the Marriot. Used to live in PR but no family left in the island so decided to stay at an hotel rather than an empty house. The Marriot exceeded all my expectations. The service is excellent. Puerto Ricans are a very friendly people in general and this shows, always asking if everything was ok and always greeting you with a friendly smile. I had a corner room (#1609) overlooking the ocean and pool/Old San Juan. The corner rooms have a wrap around terrace in which easily you could entertain over 10 people. they have chairs and a table so you can watch the spectacular sunsets from your terrace while enjoying a drink or simply relaxing. The business lounge at the 21st floor is very nice also, they have appetizers from 5-730pm (Sunday-Thursday) which can easily serve as a meal. In the morning they also have breakfast which I found more than adequate. There's an automatic coffee machine also which makes excellent espresso. The beach: perfect also. Included in the price is a "resort fee" which allows you to use the hotel beach chairs and umbrellas. So you only have to tell the attendant at the beach where you want your chair and umbrella and thats it, no $$ involved. Most of the time I was there the beach was half empty but on weekends you find more locals that stay at the hotel and can be more crowded but never too crowded. There are a few hotels nearby that you may be considering also. The closest one is "La Concha", it's the building with the big white building that looks like a clam schell (concha) in my pics. It's 2 blocks from the Marriot and was recently renovated, the lobby looks great, very chic, but the beach area is small and it's right next to a park so not very private and looked more crowded. Others in the area are the Condado Beach, but has a very very tiny beach. The Caribe Hilton has nice public facilities and nice beach but far from everything if you want to walk. The Ashford Ave. is like the Rodeo Drive of San Juan, with Cartier, Louis Vuitton, etc stores all around it. Very safe also. The bed was very comfortable, the AC worked fine and the room was always clean. Same with the bathroom. Ate at the restaurant once and was good, there are so many good restaurants around the hotel that it's hard to choose. At night there is a live band playing in a stage in the Lobby floor, it was packed with locals dancing every single night. There's also a bar at the Lobby and of course the casino, not a casino person so no opinion on it. In summary, as someone that used to live there, I would reccomend this hotel above all others in the island for it's location, it's beach, it's views (get a corner room if you can) and overall service.

You haven't done it until you rent a private residence for your vacation home. 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, large balcony, penthouse terrace, 150 yards from the beach. Friendly neighbors, a valet to guide you through Puerto Rico. Now through Aug 31, $1000 per week (4 - 7 nights). You can spend that in one night is some of Puerto Rico's comparable hotels.
