I am American, I want to go to University of Puerto Rico. Help?
-
Alright, well, I'm 18, I started college last year. I finished the semester with an A- GPA. I took a year off so that I can plan to move to Puerto Rico, my home land. I am American, technically; I do NOT speak Spanish well. I speak it poorly, but I do understand some of it. I grew up in a Latino house hold. Anyhow, here are the basics: I have 14 university credits. I still live with my parents. I got a 20 on my ACT.. awful, I know, I'm awful smart, I was just naive in high school. When I went to the university last semester, I didn't recieve any financial aid because I didn't qualify. So, my father had to pay all out of pocket. .... Okay, so I am relocating to Puerto Rico in a few months. Is it best to get a job, claim residency on the island after a while, and then apply for the university, and then for financial aid (since I will be an independent)? ...oooor, does the university require that I speak fluent Spanish? Does the university also require a certain score on my ACT to be accepted? Or does the university require that I have a certain minimum number of credits before transferring? I am so completely lost. I am a really smart girl; my last semester's GPA proves that and I took 6 classes, an overload. The only reason I have 14 credits is because not all of my classes were 3 credits. I was only 17 when I graduated high school and was 17 when I started college. Will any of that matter? Do I have to take some sort of entrance exam to be considered at the University of Puerto Rico? Oh and does the University of Puerto Rico have dorms? I'd love to have all the information possible. I tried going to the website, but it can't be translated. If anyone can give me any information at all, I'd GREATLY appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Like someone said earlier, most answers to your questions are on the website...They are in Spanish, but hey, if you want to live in Pto.Rico, you might as well start learning it, right? So get a dictionary or open you Google translator. You need to know Spanish. Period. Depending on what program you choose, you might need less Spanish than others. For example, some science and engineering courses are taught in English (because they're taught by foreign professors) and most of the textbooks are written in English. But I think it's impossible to do an entire degree taking classes in English...unless, of course, you want to major in English, and even then you have some required courses, like math that might not be taught in English. But hey, you can always start with English taught courses and become more comfortable with Spanish before the next semester begins. Last time I checked no schools in Pto. Rico have dorms, but that might have changed, so just check on the schools websites. More info: Tuition: http://www.upr.edu/?type=items&id=5&string=Asistencia+Econ%C3%B3mica Credit Transfers: http://www.upr.edu/?type=page&id=matricula_transferencia&ancla=transferencia&r_type=items&r_id=4 Admissions (but the short answer is that you need either SAT or College Board, which includes math, English and Spanish, scores: http://www.upr.edu/?type=items&id=4&ancla=p1 If you have any more questions (and you should), just send them a quick email and ask to speak to an English-speaking adviser: http://www.upr.edu/?type=servicios&id=4&string=H%C3%81BLANOS Good luck!

hummm...you have lots to learn from life, education is important and you may be very smart but by the way Im reading your message you are more worried of GPA's and have lost completely the meaning of life. Of course, you are young and you have a long way to go. I dont think PR would suite your life style. PR universities can be prestige as you are, but they do have a lot of political problems and a horrible bureaucracy system that will drive you insane. By the way work your way to the top, just like you are doing, but remember that life has a more important meaning than a high GPA or a Suma cumlaude. Im telling you by experience because I had a cousin who graduated from school when he was 16 and he was known as a genius child. He was studying in the University of PR and he was living life so fast that one day he got in a car with a friend from the university, and next thing I hear from a horrible phone call is that he died of age 17 in a car accident. His friend lived to tell the story and my genius cousin didnt. Do what you want and have to do in life, but life its not about GPA's and finishing school early, its about living to live. Life is knowledge, take it one step at a time. Think about it first.

Most of your questions should be answered with info on the college's website. Does it not have a button for "English"? If not, perhaps you can e-mail them and ask how to get info in English. The US states have residency requirements to qualify for in-state tuition and I'd guess Puerto Rico is the same. Most states require one year of residency - working, paying taxes, etc. - to qualify. You may be able to take classes part-time [at night] while you establish residency. [I did it, many years ago - not in PR.]
